I want to learn how to drift a supermoto, intentionally, not just going too fast on the power into corners.

Can anyone here do it?

Do you mean backing it in into the corner or when you power out of the corner?

Well, linking the two in a smooth movement.

I want to learn how to ride faster than Rossi, any tips?

Wink

Ok, it's not that hard, but it does take some skill and a lot of practice, especially for the back.
I've played about backing it in, but never that seriously.
Search for 'backing it in' as a start - power sliding out is a step harder and connecting the two even more so.
Do you have a supermoto to do it on? - What, if so?

Supermoto'ed TE610

I've been playing on backing it in, and it's going alright, I got suggested to drop to 18psi on the front for more grip seems to be helping.

Unless you have LOTS of power, its done by putting weight forward and using the front brake ...

As this crazy Arab demonstrates!! Cool

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJMWWE9C9aU

... your man in the SM vid was almost certainly using the front brake to do what he was doing ...

Here stunters so it all the time (just don't go for much forward movement) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTWURtPJR7Y

I did a thing at the NEC where they were trying to teach us to back it in to corners on supermotos.

The idea was come in a bit fast to a corner, then change down to lock the back up a bit to initiate a slide, then control that round a corner.

The idea is you cant completely lock the back wheel as you would using the rear brake, you just slow the wheel with engine braking, so it break traction, but then regains it quite quickly.

That's doing doughnuts etc, while I'm pretty sure he wants the SM/Rossi esque 'rear wheel steering' thing.

As above, basically you drop it down a gear too many going into a corner, then as it's spins slower than the road speed you use the rear brake to keep it spinning that bit slower than the road speed, as your speed decreases.

But he is not asking how to back it in, he is asking how to drift it out ... Rolling Eyes

Can't believe some of the suggestions on here Thumbs Down are you guys on a different planet Confused

Easiest, nay, the ONLY way to drift is to make sure there's a slight breeze and/or a current and just sit there on your boat and not do anything.

He wants both and I've never heard of the front brake being used in a competitive manner in such situations. (Ignoring that Rossi went through a phase of trail braking right through the corner, as that was for smoothness.)

Everyone i've spoken to that races SuMo says that you can't 'practise' backing it in or sliding it out for that matter.

As you practise, you will naturally get quicker and quicker, and as you get quicker your riding style will change and you will find yourself sliding it through the corners.

So just focus on riding quicker, it may look cool to slide it through the bends and i don't disagree. But as you get quicker you will find yourself backing it in, and maybe even sliding it out.

Pretty sure you go faster if you aren't in a constant wheel spin Smile

If you have picture someone backing it into a corner (or even watch a vid of some racers) you will notice them sliding it into the corner obviously, but watch them as they hit the apex and coming out of the corner.

You will see that they are pointing 'straight' a lot earlier than you would on say a sports bike riding around normally, this allows them to get on the power a fair bit sooner and obviously carrying more speed coming out of the corner.

It just so happens they may power slide out of the corner, but that is just due to the torque delivery and the fact there is next to no weight over the rear wheel Razz

I thought I'd bump this up as I've been practising a lot.

My rf900 dropped second gear so I flogged it and found a gt550 for 200 quid with loads of tax and test.

Been riding that around while saving for a proper supermoto, and it's getting a lot easier to slide into the corners. I'm finding that clicking it down a gear while at quite high revs whilst braking quite a lot on the front and giving it a bit of rear brake seems to get the rear sliding nicely round corners. I don't have anywhere to practice except on the roads so I'm doing it on a nice technical tight twisty section about 20 miles from me.

I've only crashed twice, both times basically mini highsides (in a way, not a real highside) where the rear wheel slides too much, then grips.
I'll try and get some video to demonstrate, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to where I'd be going wrong?

When i watched a vid on how they did it on motogp, i believe they used the rear brake enough to slow the tyre down but not lock it.

I want to learn how to not be a sarcastic little man who comes across as an arrogant prick. I doubt you'll have any pointers though. I believe G already did the taking the piss line on the same vein, get your tongue out of his brown.

Anyway, why is this any differernt from asking 'how to wheelie' or 'how to get your knee down'

I've been out today giving it more of a go, and basically been finding it's easier to do it when going into the corner almost too fast. Found giving it a handful more throttle when it starts to 'catch' seems to help a lot.
