Hello again guys
I'm looking for a bit of advice on an R6 */looks in Stu, Luke n G's immediate direction\*
I'm looking into grabbing a 99-01 R6 but want a little advice first
i'm selling my Lovely NSR to upgrade for summer
my restriction period finised over a year ago so i have no worries about sorting out restrictors and the like,
i'll be using it to commute often and also for a toy on the weekends and over the holidays and will keep it out of the way so no use over winter..... I love the looks and the performance of the R6 and have every intention of keeping it for a few years so...
is it worth grabbing an R6?? what can i expect its durability to be like and will it be realiable??.... I'm also looking at a CBR but after a 2001 model however they are currently a little bit above my budget
so any advice, opinions or anything like that about the bike would be fantastic
cheers ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. He's got a bird that smells but doesn't give a hoot |

The R6 is a great bike, However here are a few pointers.
* The gearboxes aren't the best. They need a good knocking into gear and can seem loud.
* You always want to go fast. (Bad idea some times )
* If you take pillion it will kill the wrists after only a short time.
* Engine very revvy, so wheelies well and has plenty of pull from the midrange upwards.
* Very tarty! You will always look good on an R6 (I do,) and can do lots to them for little money.

no worries pal all in high spirits
cheers Stu
I doubt i'd be able to get my pillions to stay on that long anyway
i did hear that it can get very twitchy in the corners especially if it hits an uneven patch of road
any problems with build quality or realaibility? ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. He's got a bird that smells but doesn't give a hoot |

mmmm purdy bike
Thats great to hear, i really look foward to grabbing one
I was looking at Kawasaki but the mechanic was telling me that the diagnostics and servicing was a nightmare to sort out
service interval is every 4000 miles miles aint it?? i was quoted £100 for a stadard service.... and that aint including parts
whats spark plugs like? how often do they need changing etc?? ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. He's got a bird that smells but doesn't give a hoot |

Cost me £170 for the 6k service! (every 6k) Plugs last 12k and camchain adjust after 22k
I have just been unlucky with mine, I have a few off's and needed some work done under the warranty. However this is my 2nd R6, the 1st was a 99 model and I loved every bit of it.
It does like to get twitchy, however that is only because the front is light under power and likes to lift, a damper sorts that out.
Again like Craig said, just fine tune the set up and she is tamed. ____________________ Carbon closet tart! https://www.bikepics.com/members/r6stuk/02r6/

Red is, by far, it is just a fact.

Black or blue. If you have a blue one you can mingle in at meets so coppers wont know which one just did 120 past them in a 50 limit! But black is the quickest colour. ____________________ Sweet reggae music. |

At least we're all agreed on an R6....
Hey, get an R6 then a custom paint job - be an individual! Then noone on here can be all smug when you change your Avator.
Of course it'll cost you more to sort replacement panels but what the hell. Since when did practicality win over a silly idea? ____________________ www.bikegirl.co.uk |

Somethoughts on what stu said:
| Quote: | * You always want to go fast. (Bad idea some times ) |
Some with most new 600s I find.
| Quote: | * If you take pillion it will kill the wrists after only a short time. |
Don't see why this should change taking a pillion .
However I don't like the riding position and wouldn't have one for general riding, cos it does kill my wrists/back whatever... get a decent test ride.
| Quote: | * Engine very revvy, so wheelies well and has plenty of pull from the midrange upwards. |
Engine very revvy do doesn't quite have the pull from the midrange that some of the other 600s have... thus not quite so good for wheelies.
Balance point is also pretty high, maybe good for starting out doing wheelies as you're less likely to flip it, but worse for perfecting wheelies as you're more likely to filp it.
| Quote: | * Very tarty! You will always look good on an R6 (I do,) and can do lots to them for little money. |
They are also pretty common, if you're bothered by that sort of thing.
Providing you keep them well serviced and aren't giving them stupid amounts of abuse they should be ok. Check that you can afford servicing for it; though it'll be about the same as for any other newish 600.
Personally I wouldn't say build quality is signifcantly better or worse than the Kawasaki at least.
Compared to other bikes the r6 does feel moderately flighty... only really a problem when it starts to shake it's head. One of the few bikes that does need a steering damper. |
