Caught speeding

Seeing as there's always several bike threads about getting caught speeding etc I thought I'd stick my head in, my dad was sent a court summons after the car was caught doing 97 mph on the M4 on the 24th of August. It was me driving. Anyone care to tell me how I got caught as I didn't see a camera or a police car on the 12 mile stretch I was on the motorway? Also what are the penalties going to be?

Last time I got done on the motorway (98.6mph) it was an SP50 - 3 points and a fine.

Generally if your doing less than 100 on the motorway, you will get away with some points and a big fine, not forgetting bending over for big bubba.

I wouldn't of thought you'd get a ban, maybe 3-6 points and a few hundred quid fine. I'm sure someone will come along and let you know exactly how many points they can give you for exceeding the limit by 27mph.

Is it your first offence?

I got caught doing 39 in a 30 (in the car). Got offered a speed awareness course thing, obviously took it so i didn't get points.

Obviously you won't get away that likely i wouldn't of thought, but you maybe able to plead with the man in the funny wig to get less points and smaller fine, but do the awareness course aswell.

you might be able to contest it (this is just hearsay and not legal advice) on the basis that the speed camera has to be no more than 10ft from the edge of the carriage way due to the fact that that the lazer can "slide" causing a higher speed reading.

I got 3 points (SP30) and a £60 fine for doing 68 in a 40. You'll probably get the same if it was a van and you weren't stopped by a real copper.

If they do you too the letter of the law they will give a 5 points and possibly £200+ fine. If they are feeling nice then he might get less points or less of a fine. I was caught doing 89 in a 60 so i was lucky that i got away with 5 points.

Thanks for all the warnings guys. I guess I've just gotta wait and see. Went and invested in a tub of vaseline just to make it slightly less painful

I got a fixed penalty of 3 points and £60 fine for 98.6mph on the M74 a few years back.

At least I had the decency to get chased by a traffic car (for "17 miles and you must have been going a hell of a lot faster than that", according to the red-faced gentleman in the white hat).

Boring old stretch of road aint it, The M4.

I was stopped doing 158mph on the M4 in Wiltshire a few months ago on the TLR. I had Dam_buster on the back.

Copper was well alright. He put me down as doing 98mph, And I got away lightly with only 3 points and a £60 Fine. (SP50)
