For the second time, in the same number of bikes. A datatool alarm has gone tits up.

I came to my bike today, went to blip the alarm. Nothing.

This has happened before, I know that I need to turn the ignition on set the alarm on, then it wakes up. So I did, then I could blip it and turn it off.

Dandy.

Go to start the bike, thumb the starter, nothing. Weird, kill switch, on, side stand up, neutral...mm..
So I turn it off, arm the alarm again, disarm and try again, same thing.

I go about testing for a while, getting more and more pissed off. Until I think, fuck it, I'll leave it till tomorrow in the day light. So I arm the alarm, get ready to lock it up and leave.
I arm it, around 5 seconds later, the alarm goes off. So I dis arm, re arm and it does it again. Bike hasn't moved or been disturbed, nothing.

So I think, ok, I'll disarm the motion sensor. So I do that, alarm STILL goes off!
My garage is part of a small block that surround quite a nice cottage. I can't leave a bike there overnight with the alarm going off!

I'm getting quite irate by this point. I can't start my bike to ride home, I can't leave it there. What the hell do I do.
The answer came in the form of a large set of wire cutters.

In my rage I just cut the whole alarm box out. Snip. Annoyingly I did it with the ignition on and blew a few fuses. Small problem.
So there I am, triumphant, holding the datatool box in my hand, separate from the bike. Bike is now dead.

*BEEEEP*

Fucking thing goes off! While it's in my hand!

Into my garage I go to get my biggest lump hammer.
I start laying into it, and my god this thing is strong! I was expecting spectacular smashage! But no, this box took most of what I had to throw at it. Luckily my efforts did make it shut up, but it's still very much alarm shaped.

Granted I was quite rash with destroying it, but I just couldn't make it work, or be quiet. So I had little choice.

And this is the second datatool alarm that's fucked up on me. I won't have another one. Save any money if you're planning on getting one, and just buy a lock. Or you know what, don't buy a lock and throw the money straight down the drain. It'd still be more useful than a datatool alarm.

Bastards.

It was just like that episode of friends with the smoke alarm.

I've got a Meta and a datatool, the datatool is ok apart from the Mvement sensor in hyperactive and the meta one is brilliant.

Spyball alarms on the other hand...

Strangely it looked like a facehugger from Alien. It looked at me funny and I thought it was going to try to jump back in the bike and infect it again. I put it down with the nearest impliment. Evil spyball peice of shit. It took ages to stop hissing after I peiced it's black, black heart. It even spat some of its blood over me (Capacitor juice) which burned like a bastard.

The datatool I had on my bandit would randomly set itself off over and over which I later discovered that it hadnt been fitted very well and some of the connections were being exposed to moisture. After a bit of hair dryer action and some heatshrink later i've not had a single problem with it.

Then bought another S4 C1 for my thundercat which I fitted myself after obtaining the installation manual and that has also been as good as gold.

The Datatool alarm was beginning to go nuts before I got rid of my R6 - it actually went off a couple of times whilst riding. Confused

I feigned ignorance when I traded it in.

Why exactly are these things so expensive? I have had 2 £25 ones from Motorbikealarm.co.uk on separate bikes and never had any problems (except for the mechanic moaning that they're not as good as Datatool ones ... couldn't tell me why though).

I'm not getting on that well with my Datatool either, glad it's not just me! The damn thing sets every 40 seconds unless the engine is running, and it has the uncanny ability to drain my battery completely within days.

I'm just about to reach the point where it gets ripped off!

As above - i got a Cyclone alarm with auto start from motorbikealarms.co.uk, took less than an hour to install, works absolutely perfect, and cost about £25 delivered..

and doesn't seem to drain the battery either!

Sounds like your battery and charging system need looking at.

And there's still the immobiliser part. TBH though I think the most effective part on mine is the flashing blue LED.

i have never had a a problem with my datatool immobilser apart from the person who installed it did a shit job and left half the wires exposed and after a while the wires started to arc out on the frame zapping all the juice out of my battery and killing the bike which was not easy to fault find believe me

Alarms are only good for waking you or alerting you that the bike has been (or is being) tampered with.

Immobilisers are only good for stopping opportunist low-level thieves.

99% of the time no-one gives a monkeys about other people's alarms going off and immobilisers alone will prove as useful as a chocolate teapot to a professional thief with a van.

My old ZX9 had a Datatool system 3 alarm that decided one day that it didn't want to stay in tune with the fobs. Luckily a mate's house was nearby so I pushed it round the corner (alarm going nuts - indicators flashing) to where his flat-bed truck was. We loaded it up and drove to the garage I got the bike from with the bike still going nuts on the back.

We looked like we'd nicked it. Ropey old flat-bed and two scruffy chaps without any bike gear on with a pristine ZX9 on the back with alarm going off. No-one ever questioned it.

Until bikes come with factory alarms don't bother. Get a f-off Almax and ground anchor and perhaps a shed alarm.

Datatools are totally shit, they are more often than not unreliable and they kill batteries for a pastime.
Get a Meta, they are a million times better.

The box is screwed together with those torx things with the hole in. Which I don't have.

And if I have to remove it through shitness, I'm sure as hell not putting it back in again.

I'll fix the wiring tomorrow.

Totally agree Andy C.

Big locks put off the opportunitists, which is all you really need to do.

If the pros really want your bike all the security in the world won't stop them, they'll just come tooled up and chuck it in the back of a van to work on back at their lair.

Big locks also don't flatten your battery, go off at petrol stations, or cut the bike out on the motorway.

Cyclone Alarm, don't use the immobiliser just in case of any future problems, a doddle to fit £23 on both bikes. Thumbs Up

Almax chains, Xena and Honda U locks and massive cables . 2 ground anchors if they're in the yard Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
