I've been for a while and have bought a shooting share in a farm.
Anyone else?

Loved the few times I've done clay pigeon. Funny I found the faster harder angled clays easier than the slow 'hit me, hit me, hit me' clays.

Occasionally I go with a mate, but it's always an 8:30 start on a Sunday so most of the time I don't bother.

'Tis great fun, though. Thumbs Up

Good stuff.
Well, I'm really getting into my game - it's almost becoming an addiction!

Problem is, I'm good at the pheasants and I'm getting a lot better at clays, but I just can't drop the bloody woodpigeons!

lol

I live out in the stix and there's plenty of tasty animals running around the place... Wouldn't mind getting a firearms licence and a shot-gun. Wouldn't know where to start with regards to learning to shoot though!

Its a shotgun, point in the general direction of said animal/target and squeeze the trigger. Laughing Wink

Better to start with shotguns for licensing ease and general availability.

If you book a couple of shoots at the clay ground, you can then take it from there.

Okay, so I am actually serious about starting shooting. My main worry would be my criminal record. Back in 2002 I got fined for £100+£55 costs for "Criminal Damage, value unknown" (long story short, I was pissed, some guys beat the shit out of me, I got revenge on them, and his car... only got grassed up for the damage to the car). Now that was 7 years ago, but on the SGC application, it doesn't take any consideration of the criminal rehabilitations act 1974. Does anyone know if it will prevent me from getting a shotgun licence?

Oh, and I've found a clay pigeon club just up the road from me! Going to give them a ring and see about getting a taster session!

Cheers

Drew

I doubt they'll mind too much about a small criminal damage offence 7 years ago if you haven't gotten anything on your record since.

I own a Beretta Game I go Clay Pigeon shooting with, very good to get into, relaxing and a nice way to spend a Sunday morning!

There are usually some local to anyone really, I have about 5 around me!

I want to get my Firearms certificate next, just a pain in the ass to get.

Went this weekend. £40 for a corporate day down in Odiham.

Shoulder /arm hurts a bit today. Excellent fun though, but like gold i got a little bored after a while.

Automatic shotguns are very cool though. Cool

Not even so much as a parking ticket since... So should be cool

I've heard they're a real bitch! licence covers specific gun and amount of ammo you can store. Don't they also cover the land you can shoot on? (unless you have an open licence)

Yeah, they are a cunt.

If you want a new weapon you have to declare it to the police, state reasonable intent to use (a good reason, like pest control on a farm for a small .22 rifle) and specify how much ammo you will need at any one time.

Insane..

I suppose compared to shotguns, the rifle is a much more dangerous beast. Aren't shotguns only accurate to 100m or so? Whereas rifles can be lethal at over 1km in some cases!

I assume there's no such limitations on shotguns... Being that you can by cartridges by the 1000!!!

Oohhhh Shocked
I want one of those 100m shotguns... Laughing
Firearms Cert' (FAC) will get you a .22lr to start. .177 HMR, .22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Round) is the next step up, followed by centrefire rifles(.223, .308 etc)
You must have a good reason/need for any given calibre. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

You'll need to speak to the Russians

I'm inexperienced to say the least, I just did a google search for effective range of shotguns.

You can get magnum rounds for shotguns, but generally speaking, a shotgun is only good at close-ish range.

Rifles are no fun and don't appeal to me.

I shoot mainly woodpidgeons and pheasants when the season is on.

Small rifles are good for scoping rabbits, but a shotgun is just as good. And when you're talking .22 rifles, they're only good for small game at close/medium range.

A large caliber rifle like a 30-06 is useful if you need to drop something v. big and heavy from a long distance. Otherwise you will never get to use it.
And with a 30-06 you always have to shoot downwards (i.e. from a higher ground position) or your bullet will literally fly for ages which is not exactly safe.....

Ah, exotic rounds....
I wasn't taking this piss dude.... Very Happy
well maybe a little!

You can get mini grenade rounds for 'em all sorts if you could get yer mitts on them, but here the typical round that is sold is birdshot of varying shot size. Effective range is only about 0-50m depending on the type of barrel choke you use..

They're fine. Of course if you shoot it from point-blank range then it's going to make a mess! lol

But remember, there are different charges and shot for different things.

i.e. the number and size of little lead balls in a cartridge AND the amount of explosive charge can both be varied.

Do it on the A1 shooting range.

It's a well run set-up. There are a lot of cowboys out there but these guys are really good.

Depends on the ammo, I can hit CoM at 400yards using 1oz slugs.
