Hi all,

I recently purchased a 99 R1 and was wondering if the newer forks (with radial brake mounting) would fit my yolks/wheel etc. as I would like to upgrade my brakes without spending a fortune on new calipers. Rolling Eyes

Thanks,

Damon

I suspect the new radial jobs arent much better than the quite frankly awesome Sumitomo Blue spots on your R1.

I fitted a set of 1999 Blue spots from an R1 onto my later model FJ1200 and they could stand that massive bus on its nose. Christ knows what it must be like on an R1 or R6.

If they arent feeling great, then new pads and fresh fluid should get it going.

I thought the blue spot calipers were meant to be some of the best. Have you thought about a change of pads and braided lines?

Fair enough if you just want some bling Mr. Green

You can make most such things fit, but there's varying levels of difficulty.
I really can't see why you'd need better brakes than the blue spot ones in good condition. So, if they're not, I'd sort them, then consider some after market fork internals if you want better suspension too.
Should be much cheaper and easier; so more riding time, though less tarty.

Have you already got braided lines? they make a big difference, coupled with a general overhaul (i.e. new seals and a general clean up) you would notice a marked improvement.

fair enough, they may just need a overhaul and new pads/fluid. Yep braided lines are fitted. They arent bad, I was just wondered if it was easy fit to get some nice radials on there. Thumbs Up + a been offered a pair going cheap, so thought it might make a nice upgrade

Cheers

In reply to your actual question, 2004+ forks will fit straight into your original yokes, but you'll need the 2004+ wheel, axle and discs etc, because the later bikes used 320mm discs.
The 320mm discs over your original 300's will be where the extra braking performance will come from if there is any.

Also if you wanted to fit a 2004 onward wheel on the back to match, you need the caliper hanger from a 2003 bike as the rear disc is a different size. Rumour has it you can keep your original hanger however if you use an fz1 rear disc but I dont think anyones actually tried...
