Is my microfilter microfiltering?

My internet connection has been somewhat tempremental recently.

I just realised this started when I got a new phone (A BT cordless one).

The internet connection doesn't stay up properly but the modem thinks it does, sites return "no data" after a while of trying to connect to them.

Does it with two different wired routers. To get it back, you need to switch both the router and the computer off then back on again.

I also get an occasional beep on the phone line (not call waiting, it's a different sort of beep and I don't have call waiting).

This is leading me to conclude that the phone is interfering with the internet connection. I've tried two other microfilters and it made no difference. I unplugged the phone last night and the connection has stayed up since then.

Does this sound plausible/possible? Any suggestions as to what I could do about it?

Maybe plug the phone and the router into different sockets, each with a microfilter?

Microfilters are pretty shit quality. I've had about 5 break on me over the years so its a likely cause of the problem. get a new one for about £3 and give it a try before you go looking for more complex causes

With microfilters, the ones with the trailing lead (on the right) are best, and contain more electronics to deal with rogue nastiness etc, so use them over the small 'socket doubler' types.

It may be something in the house causing interference on the line. A general rule of thumb is to connect the router to your master socket, rather than an extension socket. If you're already doing this, then, if your master socket is an NTE5 one, you can unscrew the faceplate to reveal a test socket that basically sits before any extensions etc. Try that and if your connection works, then something at your end is up. If not, then it could be a dodgy router or a problem with the line itself. Your ISP should be able to test it out.

A last resort option is disconnecting the ring wire in your master socket, but don't try that unless you are confident with it as it will be costly to sort things out if you mess up.

cordless phones can work on the same frequencies as routers so it could be interfering with router wirelessly if its on the same channel or one thats close to it.

is the phone in close proximity to the router. if so try moving to somewhere else.

you could also check to see if its possible to switch the phone onto another channel if not switch the router onto another channel. log on to the router and have a look at the wireless setting tab you should be able change it there.

Is hardwired with cat6 cable. I don't buy into all this wireless crap. It's something else to go wrong, slower, less secure and totally unecessary for my desktop computer.

I guess the only other possibility is that your phone is faulty. The micro-filter is probably doing it's job of splitting the frequencies that the broadband and phone signals operate on, but if the phone is putting those higher frequency signals on the line anyway due to a malfunction then it will interfere.

Just throwing it out there...

Can you try using a different phone? Otherwise, in my experience, it's almost always a badly wired up house as far as the phone cables are concerned. Use the master socket etc etc etc.

Pick up the phone, hit the 1 button and see if you hear any crackling on the line. If you do tell BT they will fix it within 3 or 5 working days.

The cordless phone may be causing interference on the wifi signal, try a diff channel.
