Yesterday, my OH was approached by our neighbour who deliberated came over to tell us some bad news.
At 04.00, he had strolled out of his house for a casual smoke. He noticed that 2 young lads were hovering around our drive. Upon hearing/seeing my neighbour, they just casually walked off. Neighbour advised that we should double check the security on our bikes.

Upon checking, OH had noticed that the chain had been tampered with. There was an obvious cut on the chain, from the attempt of it being sawn off.

We both slept downstairs with the windows open, torch and bat ready....but they did not return last night. We suspect that they might leave it for a few days and try again.

Unfortately, we don't have a garage but our bikes have alarms and both chained to the wall. Is there any other security measures?

Get a decent chain with a decent lock with a decent ground anchor. Something like the Almax or Pragmasis which can't be cropped with handheld croppers. If they use an angle grinder they will wake half the street.

Maybe an alarmed disc lock to make a noise if the bike is moved.

I'd be tempted to set up a trip wire half way up your drive connected to one of those blank shotgun shell alarms. Should give the little bastids a fright.

Bring the bikes inside the house!!

My take on thievery is that at the end of the day if they want it they'l have it...

So as long as you have something to stop the general chavs wheeling it away, and it sounds like you have, then thats about the best you can do.

Its quite depressing I know but the theiving bastards can get almost anything if they want it that bad...

they can't be very good chains if they're manually sawing through them TBH.

You need an Almax Thumbs Up

OH is going to buy 2 extra chains today!
The thieves didn't manage to saw through....just the plastic bit that protects the metal. They must've just stopped when my neighbour walked out.

Unfortunately, we can't wheel them in the house. The step on our porch is VERY high and there's no way we can lift it in and out everyday (plus our house is not big enough to fit 2 bikes).

That should have the postie leaving a trail of cack down the street from both trouser legs when you forget to disarm the device in the morning...

Shocked

Admittedly it isn't the best lock so its quite pleasing knowing they couldn't even break that one...

Defo looks like they cut at it with some cutters but didnt get through thats all...as for sawing it I hardly think they were sitting there hacking away with a £5 saw from homebase!

Almax would be good but need a chain today so had to get what the local bike shop had to offer...being we both work in london thats not many...settled for english chain and lock...

This coupled with the old chain, a disc lock and my oversensitive datatool alarm I hope its enough...for 2/3 weeks before the bike goes into storage...

Get a light thats triggered by activity. Wire it into a buzzer by the bed.

Or one of the rape alarms fitted under the seat and triggered when the bike is moved by some fishing line tied to a wheel.

Often the more homemade the better, as they wil be looking for all the usual stuff.

Even down to just a flashing led fitted by the clocks, may just be enough for them to move onto the next one, as they won't want to trip a alarm.

'Bike covers padlocked in place are another deterrent; if you had those your neighbour would have easily seen that the machines had been tampered with.

It wouldn't do any harm to make the local Police aware of the incident.

Noisy booby traps are useful. It does get annoying having to reset and disarm them everytime you get your bike out.

Things like plant pots tied to a wheel using string, plant pots in a heap, trigger one near the bottom and not too close to the bike but not too far either.

I also take both brake levers off the bike and also remove the ignition module. That's because my bike is stood for days without being ridden.

I also have cctv stickers plastered everywhere out the back and CCTV. Plus the gate has anti-theft measures in place.

Buy a security light with a PIR sensor and remote unit. We had one a while back - when the light comes on the unit (which you just plug into any socket in the house) gives an alarm. Works on the same principle as a baby monitor.

Our covers are currently locked in place to add to the aggro of stealing our bikes.

Last night we had the covers covered with 3 locks on each...just got a feeling the theiving scum will leave it a few days before they revisit.

Like the sound of this one...will take a look into this at the weekend.

Thanks

i suggest a rape alarm, bloody loud and very simple to use, only thing to do is make sure that it goes off before they start moving because if they got it in their hands and alarm goes off they are just going to drop it and run, rape alarm to bike cover maybe?

Yep had these from day 1...

The thought that they did not let all the old security deter them from trying I hope by adding more chains and alarms they decide to give up!

Thanks. Will search for these and see what I can find

An amusing and extreme thought just came to me, although I'm not sure how hard and inconvenient it would be to implement every day.

You could leave no petrol in the tank, and then just fill 'er up again each time you want to use the bike again? This way, unless they have a van at hand, they aren't going to get out of the very local area with your bike if it gets to the worst case scenario.

When my bike was stolen it was predictably ridden until empty and then abandoned.

Park the bike on a rubber mat, take a discreet wee wire from the battery positive to the chain. At some point the perp will touch the chain and the frame simulataneously, they will then have a real shock!
