Hey guys, basically I have just booked my module 2 for thursday morning, and as i am doing it the cheepo-student way (i.e. without any tuition), I turn to the wisdom of BCF to carry me through.
I just have a few questions really.
1) Say you stop at some traffic lights to carry on, when you move off from standstill do you need to do any lifesavers, or will mirror checks suffice?
2) On a mini-roundabout, imagine the first exit is straight over. Do you need to signal as its the first exit, or not because you are going straight over?
3) Does anybody know a list of the show me/tell me questions that I can memorise? I can't see these as being difficult, I just don't wanna get caught out.
Finally, any more advice you can offer me is greatly appreciated.

Right:
From memory (I did it in June) -
1. You can't do too many lifesavers (unless of course you are constantly looking behind) but for this circumstance mirror checks should suffice.
2. For mini roundabouts you don't need to signal if you are going straight over.
3. They're easy. Beep the horn, check the rear light and brake lights with your hand over the light, show how to check oil (easy), check the chain tension in the centre of the chain. Questions will be about pillion riding ie how it affects your balance etc...just common sense really.
And another tip, if you're coming to a box junction, check there's space the other side before you enter it (I failed cos of this).
It's simple though, good luck... |

1) Say you stop at some traffic lights to carry on, when you move off from standstill do you need to do any lifesavers, or will mirror checks suffice?
Yes, do a quick lifesaver first.
2) On a mini-roundabout, imagine the first exit is straight over. Do you need to signal as its the first exit, or not because you are going straight over?
It's always good practice to signal left just as you're exiting the roundabout regardless of whether it's your first exit or not.
3) Does anybody know a list of the show me/tell me questions that I can memorise? I can't see these as being difficult, I just don't wanna get caught out.
1)How to check if your lights and horn are functioning. Pretty straightforward.
2) How to ride with a pillion correctly: ensuring they don't make any signals themselves, making sure there are foot pegs for them to rest their feet on and how the extra weight of the pillion affects the handling / accelerating / braking of the bike.
3)Chain tension / tyre tread. tyre pressure, check front brakes don't stick etc.
4)Legal requirements: ie. tax / insurance / MOT etc
Finally, any more advice you can offer me is greatly appreciated.
Keep calm (easier said than done I know!) and enjoy the riding.

1. You should do shoulder checks both sides before moving off from a temporary standstill. These are not the same as a lifesaver which is a complete look round.
2. In your example, you should indicate for the first exit as a vehicle coming the other way doesn't know if you're going straight ahead or turning right.
3. Google found this: https://www.motorcycle.co.uk/getdoc/576ed463-ff6d-452c-b0f4-dffe02c9f3e0/Motorcycle-test-questions.aspx
I would recommend reading the DSA Guide to Riding and Roadcraft:The Police Riders Handbook. As you're on a budget, try your local library.
Best of luck with your test. |

1. as the lights go yellow do a left and right leftsaver. by this time the lights gone green and you can proceed without any delays
2. technically there is no such thing as a 'mini-roundabout' they all are subject to the same practices/laws. if going straight over do not indicate left until you come level/pass the previous exit.
in your example you are meant to indicate. whether its straight over or not its the first exit so you should indicate its your intention to take it
by the letter of the law you are meant to indicate to pull off any roundabout so if turning right in a 4 exit rb you'd indicate right, go around, pass 1 exit, pass the 2nd and switch indicators to left, left lifesaver check before you exit and then exit.
be sure to cancel your indicator afterwards

There is one simple rule that covers all signalling.
Indicate if it would be useful for any other road user.
Remember, you should only have one vehicle at a time on mini roundabouts. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Thanks guys, your all so good to us newbies!
One more thing, at a roundabout do you do a left lifesaver if turning left/straight over and a right lefesave for any other exit? Say you were approaching it from speed. I now know to check both shoulders if I come to a standstill at one
Thanks

If your at some traffic lights, do your spot checks when it goes amber (shoulder, mirror etc)..you dont really wanna be sitting on a green light then start doing your shoulder and mirror checks holing up the traffic . ____________________ Vlogging - www.youtube.com/caprio85

Guess who passed his bike test
I am over the moon, and get to take my baby into Cambridge without L plates on for the first time!
When I'm back from college expect a 'which bike' thread to pop up!
Thanks again for all your help guys,
Regards

I'd been riding for just over a year on 'L' plates, I did two days of training + test.
All I had to had drummed into me was to slow it down a bit, relax and make sure to do all proper observations.
But yeah, experience is key, even if you pick up bad habits they are much easier to fix than to teach someone something completely new! ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

Thanks guys! I completely agree with what your all saying. For me it was just a case of learning proper observations, but I had no external training from anywhere. So, instead of a 500 pound DAS course, you can spend £111 pounds on test fees and a bit on petrol - seems a better way to do it than me!
Sure I'm going to get a lot of 'but I'm a better rider as I had tuition' but I think we're all gonna pick up some bad habits anyway. I would personally say test standard isn't the safest way to ride, so I will adapt my style now anyway!
Now to start looking at some old bandits/ntvs ____________________ Bikes: RS50 (sold) XL125V (trade-in) GPZ500s (current - and loving it!)
