The manual will tell you how long you need to run it in, often there'll be one very restricted period (no more than a certain revs) and then a second period once you've done X miles (no more than a certain higher amount of revs) and then you're good to go.
Don't worry about warming it up, just get on and go! ____________________ Previous: 2002 Honda CB500 (sold), 2007 Suzuki SV650SK6 (crashed), 2005 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (sold). Currently bikeless

So long as you don't immediately go redlining down the street having just started from cold, there's nothing wrong with starting it up and riding off straight away, no. Just be a bit gentle with it until it reaches operating temperature.
Not least of all because the engine will warm up a lot faster when it's being used instead of just ticking over! ____________________ Previous: 2002 Honda CB500 (sold), 2007 Suzuki SV650SK6 (crashed), 2005 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (sold). Currently bikeless

I agree with above, I start up on choke whilst I put my gloves on, shut choke off and go. No hard acceleration until warmed up. I'm not hard on bike anyway as I'm a wooos...lol ____________________ Previously Known As A5tra_G

You'll know it's warmed up when you can close the choke again and it keeps running at idle :p ____________________ Previous: 2002 Honda CB500 (sold), 2007 Suzuki SV650SK6 (crashed), 2005 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (sold). Currently bikeless

Generally speaking it's bad to let an engine idle excessively, especially from cold. And on a new engine where you're trying to get rings to bed it's even worse, as on choke sitting on idle you'll get a fair amount of bore wash.
As for running in, it's really a case of RTFM and pick the brains of the garage selling it to you (the service dept, not the sales guys). Lots of people have lots of different sworn by methods of running in and the old chestnut is that giving it beans straight off the bat makes for a punchy fast and loose engine, but will die earlier in it's life, whereas running in gently produces a tight, not so powerful engine, but won't die quite as quickly.
At any rate, when bedding rings in, don't sit at constant speeds and don't overload the engine low down the revs (ie sit in 5th at 20mph) |

aluminium has finished expanding and changing shape at roughly 60 degrees.
so only rag it when its at about 60.
before then, dont take it above half revs.
ignore the above posts. its a new bike, so you may as well keep it that way as long as you can.
running in, do what you like really, consider it a cold engine so dont really go much over half revs, but make sure you rag it properly after 100 miles or so briefly. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. DON'T sit in 5th doing 20? I thought that was the norm to do for the first 500 miles or whatever ____________________ Doug97 wrote: Fuck you, what they did was awesome. That's what I've just done this morning.
Don't know if it has any long term benefits/drawbacks but I didn't part with £11k to sit below 4,000 rpm for 600 miles... ____________________ My Bikes: Piaggio NRG| Aprilia RS 125| Suzuki GSX-R 600|Yamaha Fazer Ducati 848
