If you take a learner in your car do you need to tell the insurance company beforehand?

Reluctant to just 'phone them and ask as I fear the default answer is always yes to any chance of taking more money off you.

Thanks. Bending is not an issue as haven't gone out yet.
Will look into how much it'll cost as a named driver, obviously I'll be sitting down and taking blood pressure tablets beforehand Very Happy

It actually wasn't quite as hideous as I expected last time I did it, maybe another £300 on the premium (well it's better than thousands!).

How was the quote Map?

For the record I have seen MANY cases where a premium is reduced by adding a provisional FEMALE driver on Wink

Not actually got round to it yet, still fearing for my blood pressure.

Will be adding a female provisional driver.
However, would like to look for a multi-car policy just to see if that'd be better. So that may muddy the waters a little.

Guess I'll just have to gird one's loins and take the plunge.

Sometimes it can be cheaper for her to take her own insurance out on her own car as a learner driver ( with a named qualified driver on it too) , but once she passes her test it will shoot up.

You also need to be 21 and have held a car licence for 3 years just incase you don't fit those criteria.

I was always told a supervising driver would share any points a learner acquired while with them and had no reason to disbelieve it as it makes sense. I can't find anything writte on this though, just that it's possible to be prosecuted by the police for aiding and abetting if the leaner stuffs up, presumably only in serious situations though.

Hi

Insurance is a funny thing. Sometimes adding people can reduce the premium.

As to points, I think it depends on the offence. Eg I suspect if the full licence holder was drunk then they could be done for being drunk in charge of a car.

EDIT - Bit more of a browse round. Seems that there have been cases of people being done for aiding and abetting when the learner they are supervising has done something dodgy.

Another one to watch out for:-

It is an offence to use a mobile phone while you are supervising a learner.
