 |

I bought these Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones in December 04 (as amazon will testify).
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MDR-V700DJ-Professional-DJ-Headphones/dp/B00005QBU6/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254606091&sr=8-25
I paid £66, they are now selling new for £90 on there. It says something negative about Sony that they have not released a better model nor reduced the price in five years.
The hinge has recently failed and collapsed on the left earphone and the spring has fallen out, so they no longer fit to your head properly, and if you aren't careful the left earphone falls off the band completely supported only by the sound cable. The leather effect cover over the foam on the earphones has also been crumbling and flaking off for the past few months.
I've no idea if this is acceptable for headphones advertised as professional, five years service is fair I suppose but they havent had a hard life just sat in front of a computer use, in the hands of a live club DJ I doubt they would last more than a few hours.
I'm not a technophile, but I like good headphones, if anyone has any recommendations for good quality headphones i'd be grateful. Cheaper than these would be a bonus, I resent paying more for something five years later, that I know will break eventually.

What exactly do you use them for?
Try Grado RS-1's if you can stretch that far.. you will take care of them. I went for the GS1000's but some prefer the RS-1's, especially for more rock orientated music.
Couldn't really recommend anything "cheaper" after trying those though
(I do have a set of closed-back audio technica fucking.. ath-m30's or something. They don't get taken care of, I've sat on them, etc and they're still in one piece.. seem ok build wise.) |

Jesus fucking christ, you could buy a good family car for the prices they want for those.
I guess what i'm after could be considered entry level, sub £100 blue collar suggestions please. ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

I've also got some of those sony headphones. Mine havnt broken, but although the sound quality is excellent, they are a bit uncomfy for extended use.
I recently bought these.
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350254272597&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_3643wt_727
Sound quality is surprisingly good for the price, but more importantly, they are very comfy, so ideal for playing online first person shooters for hours on end.
Sonys are still better for music.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for introducing me to fleet foxes on here. I saw them in concert a few months ago, and I listen to them most weeks. Ace band.
For anyone else

They are indeed, the album is highly recommended, and I hope they have a bright future.
Music is of far more importance to me than games, i've not noticed the discomfort from these headphones, just pissed off they fell apart, a few reviews on amazon have noted the same. I've no complaints about the sound quality, they go much louder than my ears can tolerate on the stock motherboard soundcard.
Any chance you could name drop the headphones as ebay links don't work for me for some reason. ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

AKG K242 (open back) Used my K240s for years. Workhorse phones.
AKG 701 (o.b) but out of my current pocket range. Same goes for the Sennheiser HD650. Very nice cans tho and like the K240s, used by people who want their cans to last longer than a year.

Yeah K240's rock. As do Beyer DT150's, which are my favourite for live and studio use (sound engineering). They don't look too snazzy but it's the sound I'm more interested in. Love em.
Edit: I should also mention that proper professional cans like the 150's are fully modular - i.e. you can replace every component of the unit separately. I also know that at work we have some Beyer DT100's (pretty much industry standard monitoring in broadcast) that are something between 20 - 30 years old and still in regular service. I would expect the same out of the 150's or any other unit that is designed for this kind of use. ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |

I have a set of Beyerdynamic DT231, they are the mutts nuts!!! I got them from Richer Sounds in Reading (I do recall)...super comfy and do not distort at all. I can't remember how much I paid at the time, but I know they were a bargain. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

All this talk of cans got me thinking about those K701s.(drool) But i'm really after some good closed back types. I use some K271s but they're only good for tracking. Anyone use closed back types?

FWIW the last set of headphones I bought were the Maxell Noise Cancelling type.
Wanted them for a flight to Spain, cost £15.
Obviously I can't compare to professional kit but they do the job I bought them for (listening to music, removing background humm).
Kids use them now for their MP3s in the back of the car.
Also IRC when I was young most DJs preferred only one ear on the headphone (some used 'phone handsets). Mind you, that was back in the days of vinyl. Oh, wait, they still use that.

I have a pair of Technics RPF-350. They are bulky but quite light and have lasted over 3 years, 2 of which were spent on long bus journeys to and from college. They still work perfectly and don't look too shabby. The top band is creased from where I have been lying on them in bed though. I would recommend them but I can't find them for sale anywhere, they must have stopped making them. ____________________ H100 Breaking for spares |

Anyone able to explain the implications of open backed. Better sound?
I wasn't very specific, but I often listen with other people in the room, so it would need to not disturb them, and it also blocks out the bleating of the tv or other people, so I actually have a chance to relax. Ideally they would supress a decent amount of sound even with no music playing.
I guess open backed is no good for this? ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |
