I must get some heated grips this year. Don't want another year of stuffing cotton wool into my gloves to try to keep warm...

which are regarded as good grips, which ones to avoid?

are there any that can be removed, as I have various bikes (main=er5)

I got a set of Dr Bike heated grips, same as Oxford except cheaper, made by the same people just branded defferently. They have been excellent, very easy to fit.

Oxford do a wrap around mat that goes on your grip, they can be taken off and moved around to other bikes, but I don't like them as they make the grips larger, although they are good for pillions holding on the hand grips at the back of the bike.

My oxford ones have been pretty good... and I realised the other day that they make it very easy to use an optimate as you just disconnect the wire going to the battery and connect to the optimate, useful if you bike battery doesn't last very well over the winter (there must be a charging problem somewhere) and the fact that when plugged in the oxford grips very slowly drain some power from the battery.

Hand guards do a better job in my experience.

As for grips, look up sickpup on here. He sells good ones. Thumbs Up

Oxford Hot Hands are removable. They get pretty toasty even through my winter gloves and have no thermostat so it's a choice between hot or not. I just relax my grip and let air flow under my hands to cool things down. When it gets really cold I shove the bar muffs on. Thumbs Up

I'm thinking of making some bar heaters this year.....

Gonna get some constantan and wrap up a load of loops round some sort of insulating former, then cast it inside a resin cylinder to put inside the bar.....

Don't suppose anyone knows a good thermally stable castable resin as I have no idea.....

Cheers

Oxford grips here, when wet they cause my throttle to become really quite difficult to twist oddly enough, but are lovely and warm. Do drain battery on a YBR pretty nicely though, it's either lights or grips unfortunately.

This is a bit worrying with everyones grips draining their battery....

Say you had 20W of grips running (10W per hand), that should still be pretty warm, electrically should only be like an extra indicator bulb being on all the time which isnt much load....

I suppose the cold and possibly old batteries conspire together to make for a drainy charging system. A little ampmeter like on the old bikes would be good see where the power is actually going.....

Really how hot do you need them? If you have gloves on as well, surely the main thing is just to take the edge off the cold and get a little heat back in your hands rather than give them a massive roasting...

Brand new bike, even cut out one day going along the A14 because it had no charge. I have 'all year' gloves, even with liners and the grips my hands still hurt extremely bad.

I've got a set of the Oxford heated grips - do an ace job, my only problem is I've drained my battery twice by forgetting to switch them off (any hints on how to wire them into the ignition circuit would be gratefully received).

I've actually got a set of the Hot Hands too (unused) which were bought in error, now if I can only remember where I put them....

Right then Mal, you first have to find out which is the ignition controlled live on your bike. Look in a wiring diagram for that, it will be the one connected to the CDI, coils etc when the key is turned....

Here is a diagram, you might want to relay it instead of a direct connection but its too early for relay diagrams Laughing

https://i35.tinypic.com/167qgjp.jpg

The second fuse is optional but recommended in case anything fucks up. Just an inline fuse is fine. To work out you fuse value use A = P/V

ie, if its a 12 volt system with 24w grips installed, then you have 2 amps of current so a 3 or 5 amp fuse would be appropriate.

HTHn Thumbs Up

I wouldn't recommend the Dr bike ones. The back of the control unit is an open PCB, mine blew up in the first week. The supplier sent me a new set and the throttle grip stopped working after three months. Fortunately, I didn't send the original ones back, so I will replace the throttle grip with the one from the first set.

Apparently the Dr Bike and early Oxford ones are renowned for failing on the throttle side, because the cable into the grip breaks at the point that it enters.

Cheers

if you are buying new oxford ones there is no need to wire them up like that as the will turn off when the battery drops below a certain level.... how ever this means that even when they are off they do draw a small amount of current, over time it is quite a bit and that plus a cold, hard to start motor normally does the battery over. Well it does on my little 250 (which I am pretty sure has the same battery as the 600 Thinking )

Might invest in a set of these as it literally is starting to get fooking freezing now. Like in the past 2 weeks it's gone to sub zero temperatures.

Have to start taking it easy as I'm still thrashing my bike like it's summer weather and as I found out yesterday, opening the throttle fully for a quick burst, the back wheel spins like fuck when it's freezing cos there's less grip on the road.

Can't wait to get my KTM now.

Thats the main reason I don't like the sound of heated grips. The throttle heater has to rotate and stretch which must fatigue the cable.....

Google "warmfit" bar heaters, its a solid lump that sits inside the bar and heats it up that way

I've got Daytona heated grips and they are excellent. Been using them for almost 10 years now.

The newer oxford ones 2008 and above can be wired direct to the battery, the current draw is tiny.

Also they turn themselves off when they sense a drop in power from the Battery.

I have left mine on so many times and never come back to a flat battery.

Hmmmm maybe the Varadero has a very good Battery (i doubt it) but i use them with the lights and my sat nav running never have any problems
