because you take a hunk of aluminium, then remove bits, to make the bit you want

as with the car

so for example, imagine if a can of beer was made by hollowing out a solid cylinder of aluminium

a 1lb of aluminium may have been used in making it, even if only a fraction of an oz is in the finished product

They made the whole car that way. In the online book, it shows the skips of swarf taken off site. A tonne a week apparently.

I agree its pretty inefficient, but i guess when money is no object, its better to use a solid part carved frome one piece of aluminium.

However, I cant help thinking their method of joining pieces, using dowels and bolts is a bit inefficient. I'd prefer the kind of contact bonding that lotus uses.

But I don't know the pros and cons of each method.
