Karma and the very blonde moment

Following on from Wali's thread earlier this year, I thought I'd post a few of my recent experiences which reminded me of his recollections.

I build and fix PCs for friends, and my mate Adam has been itching to get a new one for a while. While he wanted a laptop, he also wanted to play new games so we ordered him some bits and I sourced a second hand CPU from another friend as I knew he had one sitting there and he could do with the cash.

My mate with the CPU (Liam) asked for £30 and Adam asked if he'd go down to £25. £25 is fine, he said, so I set off to Liam's to pick it up on the day the computer bits arrived. I paid for the CPU and told Adam he could pay me back later as I had a few quid spare in the bank. Otherwise we would have had to have waited til his payday to finish the build, and I can imagine how frustrating that might have been for him! I gave Liam £30 as I knew he was hard up but didn't tell Adam about this.

Got to Adam's that evening and noticed that the CPU wouldn't go into the new mobo, bending some pins in the process. A quick scan of the 'net confirmed that it didn't fit, and I couldn't give it back as the pins were buggered! As it was me who broke it I footed it, and we ordered one of the right socket type.

Pretty miffed that I'd gone out of my way and landed up out of pocket (my fault due to not doing my homework), I tried not to think about it and we got to fitting the new CPU and setting the computer up. Didn't ask for anything for doing the job for my mate but he's just ordered me a well nice Snap-On jacket with which i will get a free mug, hat and a pair of thermal socks . I am quite chuffed with this result. Although not a touch on Ariel's top-of-the-leaderboard karma finding, it was definitely another case of money well spent!

I spent yesterday out on a school trip and the coach induced a lot of year 8 vomiting on the return journey.
I looked after a little girl who kept on chucking up by finding her new sick-bags (actually souvenir bags from the safari park) and tissues. By the time I got back to Brum I was well sticky and smelt real funny. I let her use my phone to call her mom so she would know what to expect (mom was quite nice about it) and cover her car seat.
I should get a huge blob for that except it is my job so I guess I will not.

We only had four sick out of 46, I just happened to be at the back of the bus ( Bloody staff tend to group at the front on school trips and this was no exception with three next to the driver, I like to ride shotgun with the bad boys) and this was the vomit zone. Once the smell hits the other kids they tend to join in.

That is such a noobish mistake, but one that we all seem to make. Although, in the 4 years I've been building and repairing PC's I've never been the one to bend the pins of a CPU beyond repair yet

Also, after a while you know all of the sockets entirely off by heart so you just don't have this problem. What's more annoying are the incredibly expensive intel motherboards that you can ruin rather than the chip because as you probably know the pins are on the motherboard. However, Intel created that socket standard for their CPU's, so they can be as biased as they want about saving their hardware rather than others when pins go wrong. Not sure why though, surely they're cutting in to their revenue stream by a tiny amount.

I once put a screwdriver all the way through a customers motherboard so I wouldn't worry too much

Haha, yes... well I've been holding a 650W PSU in my hands as it exploded loudly with a blinding flash of blue light. Probably about the most drama I've experienced yet trying to fix a computer
