So they all claim to kill 99% of germs, except the latest batch at my work state they kill 99.999% of all germs!!

So why can't they make one to kill 100% of all germs and just do away with all these 9's. Also, how do we know or not wether that 0.0001% of germs is the one that keeps giving us all colds/flu's etc? It could be that the 99.999% covers all other germs you'd never get in britian and using this stuff is actually pointless anyway... And finally, just how many different germs does that 0.0001% represent anyway!!?

They can't safely kill off 100% of germs, because that'd probably eat our skin.
I love the idea that 100% of bacteria/germs/bugs/whatever are supposed to be harmful in a big way: given that we play willing host to several billion (if not trillion) such beasties, I find this whole cleanliness rant to be laughable.

In related news, we've had loads of those alcohol-based gels dotted around the campus. I'm surprised that no student's tried drinking the stuff yet, in truth...

"Germ" is a bit of a vague term. Basically an infectious agent that can cause disease.

Usually a bacteria, virus or fungus, but not always.

So, one that kills 99.999 will fail to kill one out of every 100,000 of these.

A few spring to mind that are very hard to kill.

One is the bacteria Pseudomonas Aurigenosa which has a coating round it and is very good at adapting to survive attempts to kill it. It had been known to even colonise the chlorhexidine scrub surgeons wash their hands in.

Spore forming organisms, including many of the fungi and certain bacteria (eg. anthrax) are also tricky because the spore is very resistant to external attack.

Another one that springs to mind is the infectious agent in transmissable spongiform encephalopathies (such as CJD) this is just a short chain protien with a bit of nucleic acid attached called a prion. It doesn't have much of a 3D structure and so it VERY resistant to destruction. It can even survive being autoclaved (heated to 137 degrees for 15 minutes). I can't think of anything you could safely put on your hands that would destroy a prion.

If everyone was exposed to all of these bad boy germs from a younger age perhaps our immune systems would be a bit better.

I use them everytime i go to the hospital (if instructed to do so). However fit the nurses are, they suddenly turn unfit when they start going all demon like on you for not nuking your hands

I did use the stuff at work for a while but then my hands started cracking up and becoming sore. Since I've stopped using the stuff ny hands have been fine again!
However since I've managed to remain alive and in pretty good health for the last 33 years of my life, I think I can currently keep going without burning my hands off!

Am I foolish to be wondering about the incredible evolutionary pressures to become alcohol resistant?
Although perhaps as the intermediate stages are (maybe) no advantage, and this protective wall you speak of is quite a large mutation could be why this isn't happening?

The first time i used it at hospital i smelled it and decided to lick it because it smelt like alcohol. It tastes bitter. I don't use it day to day just when you have to at hospital. Whats wrong with good old fashioned washing your hands with hot water and soap.
