Living in a flat with the GF for your final year of uni?

Hi,

Currently on placement this year and starting to decide what to do for my final year of uni.

Im on a 5 year course, done 3 and 1 to go (placement counts as 1 too).

I need a bit of advice really. Im sick and tired of moving into new houses and dealing with problems. All my student houses have been with good mates but as im a fairly clean person they have got on my nerves a lot.

The decision is to live with the GF (been together 3 years and its going really good so not all that worried about breaking up, sounds nieve but we have lived together before in 3rd year with others and it was really good) or live with some mates (as well as the GF) and just pick the ones that are clean!!

Please vote or share your advice as would love to hear lots of opinions on this as I just have no idea what to do!! It will be with the GF either way but the question is whether with other popple or not.

Cost: Living in a flat would be very similar. I pay for everything at Uni whereas my GF doesnt and her rents said they would be happy to help us out a bit so would bring the cost down. Rent is pretty simular in Bath for a shared 1 bed flat to student letting (~£300pcm).

Social: Bit im most worried about, were not a clingy couple at all and after a lot of couple time I really want to see other people. When we lived in a 4 bed (us + 2 others) it did break it up a little.

Work: Final year will be lots of work for both of us and I only really work well at Uni so may get a bit lonely for the GF. Though saying that we both will have transport so can visit other ppeopleand plan to live in student area either way (flat or shared house again).

It may be fine living with your girlfriend in the final year. I tend to think all women are mad, although this may be just the ones who choose time to spend with me. Or maybe I make them mad.

I think expecting a woman to be completely sane for a whole year and not distract you from your final year, is wishful thinking, but maybe your situation is not similar to my experience.

Blessing in disguise mate, they will nag you to stay in sometimes, but you will thank them when you actually get some work done.

Then again I lived with my girlfriend for all 3 years of uni.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it?s worth.

Im not so worried about the concept of living with her as did it last uni year and TBH my gf likes to party more than I do so she wont be a problem. My problem is last year so did get a bit lonely when at home when I wasnt.

Also, not sure how easy it will be to find something (will be travelling July-September) as reckon I will have to be done later if we decide to get a flat.

I live with my other half at uni, never had a problem yet lol We are both in the same year and doing similar courses which helps though because we have similar work to do and placement times.

Im sure she understands that you will have a lot of work to do and that you should go out quite often with your course mates. Plus you'll get some company rather than living on your own!

If your relationship is as stable as you're describing, then go for it, as you need everything to be as stable as possible for your most important year of uni.

I lived with my boyfriend for my final two years of university. We landed on our feet with a three bedroom maisonette (sounds awful, but essentially it was the top three floors of a very big, grand Georgian House).

It worked perfectly for us as we had enough space to be on our own and concentrate on our work (two spare bedrooms meant we had a study each as well as a living room and a dining room for socialising - we hosted quite a few parties).

It was cheaper than student lets, a whole lot better and perfectly quiet and clean. Absolutely ideal for studying. If you do fall out, remember why you're at university and wherever you end up renting make sure you have room to escape from one another.

Yep its just the two of us- we did consider sharing with others but our placements make us work a variety of shifts including nights, so we thought if we are on our own, we wont be woken up by others during the day after a night shift lol

I think the advantage for you is that you have lived with your girlfriend before, so its not like you will be learning each others bad habits lol

Practically, the only annoying thing we come across is buying twice as much food etc. But there isnt much difference with cooking for one or two.

You need to remember though that your last year is important- you have come so far lol, so you may not want to be going out all the time with your mates if they have different priorities- and so your girlfriend maybe the perfect excuse for staying in lol. Your girlfriend will more than likely understand though that you will need some space to get on with your work as well.

Plus if you have had a crap day, you get to rant about it when you get home lol and of course its nice to have the company of being together.

Anyway, as long as you know you have got a good relationship going- go for it! Hope this helps though and good luck!

I lived with my GF for her first year of uni (i ain't no student) we lived at student accomdation. Then moved into a house with some mates and i ended up fighting with the lads there. Then we stayed at my mothers for a few months and now we have our own house. It's cool with just us two. You can both do what ever you want where ever you want . Its easier to clean and theres no fucknuts to piss you off with loud music.

Go for it mate. Best thing i ever done.

I am in my third year at university (well actually I'm on a 4 month placement at sea but i'll be back next month) and am living with my girlfriend who is also in her third year.

We've been together the best part of four years now and like you described yourselves we're definitely not a 'clingy' couple.

For me it's pretty similar to just living with friends (as I did previously) but without the traveling to see my girlfriend (only 10 miles but still). I still go out with my mates, she still goes out with hers, we have the spare room if anyone wants to crash or if worst comes to worst , we have some mutual friends at uni but not so many because although we both live in Sunderland Uni I'm at Newcastle lol

It was weird commuting to uni to begin with but I like it now, anyway I digress, I think if you're in a stable relationship personally I think it's a good move, as previously mentioned you'll thank her for alot, maybe not nagging but a few gentle reminders that keep your goals in sight.

For me I think it helps because I see the long term more now, rather than just taking it as it goes. I've probably lost some spontaneity but only for ridiculous things so for the better I'd say.

I've just finished a 12 hour shift onboard so if any of that doesn't make any sense just let me know
