Looking at getting a ZX7R in the next few months.

Reason I have settled for one is that I really like the styling and 'feel' of the 400, and I am assuming (rightly/wrongly?) that the ZX7R will be similair in feel - Albeit larger?

Any advice on what to look out for?

Cheers guys Smile

commonly known as the mobile torture rack,
for what they are, and there age, they handle superbly, if a little (ok alot) on the hard and uncomfortable side,
more than enough power, nothing compared to the new 1000cc bikes of today, but still good,
as for the styling, i thought mine was gay, and im not really a fan of green bikes, but if you like it then sweet
a good all round road bike really

Rubbish bikes. Tell you what, buy one and then swap it for my zx6 Thumbs Up Wink

One of the best looking bikes ever made, IMO, been a few good articles about then in magazines of late.

Imagine it will feel a lot heavier than the 400, but great bikes Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Go for it....I think its a great choice for moving up in the bike world.

It wasnt my original choice but after having sat on the newer stuff and being not exactly a little fella (6'2" and 17 stone) I made them look small.
I did a lot of research and upon insistence from my GF that it 'had to be green' Very Happy I started reading up and finding out about the 7. It has a legendary front end and that was one of the main reasons I went for it (had a major off due to tankslapper years ago that sticks in my mind a lot).
Yes its a heavy bike no doubt in comparison to the newer stuff but you dont notice that when you are moving. I also liked the fact its still what I call 'old school' as in it has carbs and very little in the way of electronics to go west on me. Meaning there is very little you cant attempt yourself when it comes to servicing and maintenance.
Of course it comes down to personal preference but I for one dont regret buying mine and the more I ride it the more I like it. As mentioned above....redmonkey is the place to go for info and also for picking up spares and 'bling' . Its a veritable aladdins cave of stuff Smile
Fast becoming a classic as well which is kind of cool....I get a lot of comments from people about mine and most do a double take when I say its 10 years old.

Heres a few pics to help persuade you...... Very Happy

A ZX6R would seem to be a more appropriate follow on from a ZXR400. The primary advantage of the 400 is lack of weight and flickability. The ZX7R is known for neither of these features.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Good point...should have added that its probably hard to pick up a 'mint' one unless your really really lucky. Like any vehicle...once its been around a few years and had a few owners its hard to know how its been used and abused.

I have to say though that if you can get a good one and yes they are out there then I dont think you will be disappointed.

Engines are known to be pretty bullet proof and although sound noisy at idle that disappears and is replaced by an addictive induction roar once the pace picks up Smile

If your going to look at one....get on the redmonkey site and ask around...chances are someone lives near enough to you and may be prepared to come look with you or maybe even know the bike in question....and immediatly your one step ahead.

I was lucky I guess....mine had few previous owners who did little to nothing with it except take it out on a sunday it seems.

What he said. You need to grab hold of a 7R and show it who's boss, but I had a ZXR400 as my first bike then went to a ZX7R and don't regret it at all. I've had two 7Rs and for me they are an excellent bike.

A test ride is in order. When I first had mine it was so uncomfy that I could barely walk after 50 miles, but after putting in the miles I got used to it and could easily cover 400 miles with no major problem.

The engine is not particularly torquey, but coming from the 400 you will still find it incredible for a while. The front end is very confidence inspiring too. Plus they are one of the best looking sports bikes of the 90s, and for how much they go for an absolute bargain. Mine was also perfect for touring for me.

Whoring time:

EDIT: When you're looking at them have a good look at the downpipes (hopefully find one that's had stainless replacement) as they rot very quickly. The front calipers can be expensive to refurb and need to be looked after so make sure they're not binding.

I had one for over 4 years and 25k miles. I loved it. It went through the winters no probs (apart from carb icing) had 119rwhp (dynoed) and handled superb. Down bumpy back roads it was the most stable bike Ive ridden at speed and would only slightly slap hard on the power in 2nd down real bumpy roads.

Using it to commute I could get close to 50mpg no probs while cruising in the 80-95mph bracket on mways.

Started off feeling uncomfy, after a year I didnt even notice it and you just sort of fit in the bike.

Not bad with a pillon either for handling.

I replaced it with a 2008 ZX10R as the new deal was too good to turn down and mine was at 40k and starting to feel a little tired.

I actually miss the bike and would have another in an instant if I had the room in the garage, but I cant get away with 3 bikes just yet.

If you get down behind the bubble it doesnt stop pulling till silly figures, mine was an import with kph speedo and I saw it passing the 280 mark no probs a few times.

The 10r walks away from it though like it was stood still but is actually more uncomfy !

Comparing my J model ZX6 to the ZX7 is like night and day.

ZX6 is much easier on the back and wrists with its 'standard' raised clip ons and low tank. Can do miles on it without aching. Still flickable like the 400.

ZX7 is a full on head down arse up race position imo, doubt i could ride it for long without some discomfort! (6'6) But then thats not what it was made for...

An early R6 might be a better choice if you're looking for a ZXR400 on steroids.
Compared to a circa 2000 or later 600 I think the 750 is rather lacking, though I admit does look quite pretty.
Decent looking one can often been seen at ridiculously over inflated prices when you compare to a similar spec GSXR.
