Better (fairer) way to charge for road usage.

I've been thinking about this, and have decided if ever I have my own country this is how road use will work.

No insurance or tax.


Well not exactly, the insurance and tax will be built into the price of petrol.

At the moment if we take two people, Mr.A and Mr.Z

Mr.A has a bike and rides for one day a month. He pays a years insurance, and a years tax, and petrol for those days.

Mr.Z has a bike and rides every day of the year. He also pays one years insurance and one years tax.

If petrol prices incorporated tax and insurance, then both are paying only for the time they spend on the road, if you understand what I'm saying.


I understand that this makes governments less £££, but it seems fairer.

How would you deal with the paperwork with insurance?

How would you stop 17 year olds driving their dads lambourghini if all they have to do to be insured is buy petrol?

Would you be insured with each petrol purchase or just for having petrol in your car? i.e fill the tank up but only do 10 miles a week how would the insurance work?

Only part I agree with is the road tax should be included in fuel tax, insurance wouldn't work.

As others have said the insurance wouldn't work, but the including the road tax I think would be a great idea as the motorist gets the choice in what he/she wants to drive, but would be penalised on the fuel consumption of the vehicle. Current road tax rules seem to nobble you for emissions but not even take into consideration fuel consumption itself, which seems pretty daft to me.

Interesting to note that many bikers are now suggesting that the RFT should be dropped and included in petrol prices.

When this was 1st though of, back in the early 80's bikers were the biggest group against this.....

Can you think why


From a car drivers point of view i can understand it, but i still can't from a bikers.

We get it quite cushy already in that tax for bikes has nothing to do with emissions. Even with new bikes, manufacturers slap big ugly cans on their race reps because they know as soon as it leaves the showroom it will come straight off! I bet many older bikes put out a right load of co2 (mine included). However with bikes being such a minority compared to other vehicles the enviromental impact and the government's gain in revenue from doing that would be negligble.

Thinking about what iooi said, we pay pretty much fuck all to tax our bikes so the majority of riders (particularly of small bikes) would end up out of pocket. Not sure how things were in the 1980s, but I know that most riders today have a bike as a secondary method of transport. Perhaps this sort of thing would affect bikers less now than it did then?

What I like most about this idea is that drivers would have more of an incentive to drive economically.
