shitting stupid vista to xp

Mate has vista home (yes I know, bag of shite) it's awful, slow and his computer is actually ok specs wise.

I suggested either go to xp or windows 7 which is brilliant btw.

I have corp xp disc but you can't just downgrade with vista because it is so shit.

Now, if I bung a new HD in, can I put xp on that? Will there be any remminents of vista left in the chipset or something that makes it not work?

Why would you need a new HD? Wipe Vista off the current one, quick-format it and install XP on it.

Old school, boot from another device (floppy, usb drive, usb floppy, boot cd/dvd, BartPE disk, etc.) with the necessary command interface on it Rolling Eyes

Maybe it's just me but I have a feeling that if you didn't know that you should put down the keyboard and walk away now.

You boot the system off an XP CD and use the 'delete partition' command that comes up on one of the install-windows (it's an idiot-proof wizard effectively, follows up with a 'quick-format' window). You may need to go into the BIOS first (hammer the Delete key as the system is firing up, or look for whatever key it requires during start-up, sometimes it's not the Delete key). In the BIOS you need to set the CD-drive as the first boot-up drive.

don't even need to select quick format, delete the partition as said then click install on the unpartitioned space and hey presto it'll format it for you.

I have installed xp many times but the problem being is the hardware is not xp compatible e.g. later version of sata than xp will come with on the disc so I need to somehow get hold of the mobo sata drivers and slip them into the xp disc.

Do a google and look into building your own BartPE boot CD disk with the extra necessary drivers.
Add these from the boot CD you built when it asks you in the XP install process.

IIRC try looking for pebuilder. Last time I looked and had to do this there was a pebuilder3110a.zip file to download (should have been updated a zillion times since then).
That had all the necessary info for you to create the boot disk.
You will need an original XP disk though for the creation bit.
Trust me, if I can work it out it's not that hard Very Happy

Same version # as I downloaded a year ago, so not changed that much.
Obviously you'll have to google for the sata drivers you need.
I'd try the computer or motherboard maker's site(s) first.

Put them on a floppy and press F6 when XP asks if you have any other drivers to install (at beginning of the install).

What's a floppy? I did see a PC once, a few years ago, that had a space on the front panel that said "Floppy? Fvck off back to the Ark."

Put the drivers on a USB stick and pray the system recognizes it when you need it to.

Found a program called nLite which means I can edit the xp disc before I use it and integrate the drivers I need onto it.

Floppy drive is a small flat device that you plug into a USB slot.

Good luck getting XP install to read a USB stick.

It will copy all the drivers that the system is using for the hardware you are running.

Yeah, that's why I said pray.

You'd also want to be praying for somebody to kick some sense up your arse if you went out and spent money on a USB-floppy just to install a driver. The same USB that a USB-stick uses that won't be recognized by the XP install. Laughing

I've got one that came with a laptop, but I've never used it. Do they still sell floppies then?


They do. Probably for folk who need to install XP onto SATA drives Smile

Actually I still use them for installing Win2003 onto servers with SCSI discs.
