Of the 4 wheel variety.
I really fancy having a go at some competitive motorsport... I'm looking for something reasonably cheap (Maybe £2k at most in the first year).
I live just west of london, must be able to keep the vehicle on the road to start with.
Anyone got any suggestions of where to start? Anyone already doing something similar? ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

You could try autosolos. Dirt cheap to enter and doable in a bog standard hatchback if you want to. Sprints are often quite cheap too.
Check out your local motor club. ____________________ Photos and that |

I think you are looking at banger-racing or low end Karting on that budget.
If you like the idea of karting, I can give a few pointers!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |

Really stuck on four wheels?
Minimoto offers as much competition as you want, but can be done out the back of a hatch back. While it's seen as a 'kids' sport, there's plenty of adults competing, as with karting.
Not sure it's quite a 'sport', but drifting can be done fairly cheaply; buy an already converted vehicle. Not sure if they have lower-level competitions and it does take a reasonable amount of skill (ie I'm not very good at it ), but I've enjoyed what I've done.
Turn up to work in an old 200sx with a roll cage and the welded diff making the wheels hop as you park is so much cooler than the latest porsche or whatever . |

I'd tend to agree with you, but the world is against us.
Competitive drifting doesn't really appeal to me, however, as I prefer the get to the end first style competition. Good fun playing, still. |
I agree with all you've listed, bar football. Much as i detest (professional) football (sport for cheats, homs and gheyers etc), it a proper sport - i.e. whoever scores the most goals is the winner. If they changed the rules so it was 'whoever plays with the most style/panache', then it would be in the same league as drifting, ballet et al.
Now, to paraphrase someone else from another forum and pass those comments off as my own:
Drifting/getting the backend out is a bit like wanking - great fun on your own, but to turn up somewhere with a load of other people and have someone judge you on it is more than a little odd.

'fraid so, I'm just to crap on a bike for it to be worthwhile.

Yeah, I just want to keep things cheap to start with. I can afford more than 2k during the year if it's trickled in rather than upfront cost - assuming I have fun doing it!

May as well, karting may be second choice...

Looks like my favourite suggestion so far! The stock hatch would be cool - now all I have to do is persuade the missus to let me remove the seats from her 205! ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

Try PCTs (Production Car Trials) - aka how far can you drive up a muddy hillside without getting stuck or sliding backwards. Suprisingly good fun (and suprising difficult), you can do it with a bog standard car of any sort (there are a few mods allowed, but no LSDs...), you very rarely damage the car (tho it will get muddy!) and you can share a drive so significant others don't get fed up
Ask RACMSA (or whatever it's called these days ?) about your nearest Motor Club and go from there. ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

Yes, you won't be touching 2 stroke karting with that kind of budget.
Rotax Max cost me ~£40k two years ago, at club level you'd be pushing £5-10k minimum to be competetive.
No such thing as 'cheap motorsport' unfortunately, try Stock Cars or banger racing, about as cheap as you can get it. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."
