Of the 4 wheel variety.

I really fancy having a go at some competitive motorsport... I'm looking for something reasonably cheap (Maybe £2k at most in the first year).

I live just west of london, must be able to keep the vehicle on the road to start with.

Anyone got any suggestions of where to start? Anyone already doing something similar?

You could try autosolos. Dirt cheap to enter and doable in a bog standard hatchback if you want to. Sprints are often quite cheap too.

Check out your local motor club.

Hi

Also think about karting, although you will probably be looking at the cheap fun kart classes with that budget.

All the best

I think you are looking at banger-racing or low end Karting on that budget.

If you like the idea of karting, I can give a few pointers!! Smile

Really stuck on four wheels?
Minimoto offers as much competition as you want, but can be done out the back of a hatch back. While it's seen as a 'kids' sport, there's plenty of adults competing, as with karting.

Not sure it's quite a 'sport', but drifting can be done fairly cheaply; buy an already converted vehicle. Not sure if they have lower-level competitions and it does take a reasonable amount of skill (ie I'm not very good at it Smile ), but I've enjoyed what I've done.

Turn up to work in an old 200sx with a roll cage and the welded diff making the wheels hop as you park is so much cooler than the latest porsche or whatever Razz.

Not unless you'd class ballet dancing as a sport.

Probably a good place to start would be The 750MC, they run a stock hatch, hot hatch and all comers classes - they also run a MR2 cup, which is tickling my fancy.

As others have suggested, perhaps have a look at doing some sprints, hill climbs etc. Trackdays would certainly give you a good taste too.
Once i get shot of the god-awful multi-shits on my MR2, i shall be giving it a good punt around some tracks. Missed out on some Compomotive M0s with Toyo rubber last night - outbid on egay by a tenner - gutted!

What about high-diving, that paedo-thing with twirly pubescent girls and football? All involve judging a (artistic) 'performance', rather than getting to the end first, or whatever.

I'd tend to agree with you, but the world is against us.
Competitive drifting doesn't really appeal to me, however, as I prefer the get to the end first style competition. Good fun playing, still.

I agree with all you've listed, bar football. Much as i detest (professional) football (sport for cheats, homs and gheyers etc), it a proper sport - i.e. whoever scores the most goals is the winner. If they changed the rules so it was 'whoever plays with the most style/panache', then it would be in the same league as drifting, ballet et al.

Now, to paraphrase someone else from another forum and pass those comments off as my own:

Drifting/getting the backend out is a bit like wanking - great fun on your own, but to turn up somewhere with a load of other people and have someone judge you on it is more than a little odd.

If car sprinting is at all like bike sprinting you will not get very far on 2K if you want to be even slightly competitive.
When I took up sprinting it was a choice between that and heroin, I should have taken smack , it would be cheaper.
If you go in for a sport that is not for road legal vehicles remember you will need a means of getting your self and car to the track so cost out trailers and make sure your car is up to the job.

But I thought the team with the most style when they 'go down' in the penalty box in the last minutes got the most goals? Razz

Yeah, I just want to keep things cheap to start with. I can afford more than 2k during the year if it's trickled in rather than upfront cost - assuming I have fun doing it!

May as well, karting may be second choice...

Looks like my favourite suggestion so far! The stock hatch would be cool - now all I have to do is persuade the missus to let me remove the seats from her 205!

Try PCTs (Production Car Trials) - aka how far can you drive up a muddy hillside without getting stuck or sliding backwards. Suprisingly good fun (and suprising difficult), you can do it with a bog standard car of any sort (there are a few mods allowed, but no LSDs...), you very rarely damage the car (tho it will get muddy!) and you can share a drive so significant others don't get fed up Wink

Ask RACMSA (or whatever it's called these days ?) about your nearest Motor Club and go from there.

Maybe not... One of the first links I saw had a max age of 23 and I'm 29, looks like that was just that group though.

That said, I don't like the look of autosolos - if I wanted to drive round cones all afternoon I'd just pop down to the M25 - there's a massive contraflow at the moment!

Banger racing is no good unless you can afford to buy a new car every week after they get smashed up. Unless you dont smash them up which is unlikely.

Maybe try a formula like rookie rods or hot fords, oval racing is fun and cheap and there are tracks all over the country affiliated with each other. The only problem is you cant keep the car on the road which is the reason i dont do it at the mo.

Rookie Bangers are good, the cars last a bit longer than proper Bangers as its just tap and spin rather than full contact but for cheap competitive racing i would look at rookie rods and hot fords on google.

Hope this helps.

Bangers dont get just dented, rookie Bangers do and the cars last a few meetings, people regularly have to be cut out of proper Bangers, the injurys can be sever. I know people who have had broken limbs, one with a broken back and my cousin has had a water tank burst on him melting his overalls to his arm!

Cars are regularly snapped rather than just dented.

Do a search on you tube for big hits at places like. . . Arena essex, buxton raceway, mildenhall etc.

Also search for big hits at the firecracker and king of the peaks. You will be amazed.

Yes, you won't be touching 2 stroke karting with that kind of budget.

Rotax Max cost me ~£40k two years ago, at club level you'd be pushing £5-10k minimum to be competetive.

No such thing as 'cheap motorsport' unfortunately, try Stock Cars or banger racing, about as cheap as you can get it.
