I have a 10kg water with additive extinguisher (kind of like a runny foam) that is designed for fuel fires. Only thing you can't use it on is an electrical fire, but there is no electric in my lockup.

In my bedroom I have an old Halon extinguisher which is now banned due to ozone depleting effects. Really nasty to inhale but will put out ANY type of fire.

I got both of these for free when the extinguisher service man came round at work. He had a load of older ones in his van that he'd replaced due to them being either beyond their serivce life or (more commonly) being the wrong colour to comply with EU legislation. They skip them all so it's no skin off his nose if he gives it to you.

So everyone else leave it to luck?

One of my mates learned the hard way a few years back. Spent years making a chop out of a 1950's BSA A7. Fired it up just outside his lockup without the flash arrestor on the carb. It spat back and lit thefuel running out of the carb tickler. Couldn't put it out (would have taken a single squirt of an extinguisher). The fire eventually hit a fuel line, all he could do was push it away from the buildings and take pictures of it burning for the insurance.

Do all my work outside on concrete ground. If a fire broke out I'd just panic and run.

Also, I agree with your points about that thread, and echo the notion "fukin' lol".

Got a pretty cheap one from Lidl that`s supposed to do all fire types - was under a tenner I think Thumbs Up

I have a large Carbon Dioxide and a smaller dry powder extinguisher.

Not been used yet and touch wood (I'm standing on a wooden floor) they won't need to be! Thumbs Up

Not at all. The garage is part of the house so I've got a decent sized CO2 and a big water one sitting inbetween the garage and the kitchen (two most likely sources of fire!), plus a little baby one that I take to trackdays and such.

I've also got a little one in the car - never know when it might be useful, ideally not for my car but maybe for somebody else.

If I particularly expect something to catch light, I do tend to do it outside mind you.

There's a tap, it's even a bit accessible at the mo as there's no bike leaning on it. There is a dry-power fire extinguisher, but it's got no 'go' left, however if you unscrew the top, you could shake it on it, or squeeze the trigger and rattle it up side down for a more gentle flow Smile.

Ive got a biggish (not sure on size, free standing) CO2 one for the 'workshop' area, and a tiny water one for the house Laughing
After cranking a moped for about 5 mins of no starting, it backfired and caught fire. Luckely the extinguisher was close to had and saved the bike, shed, and fence

Oh and I forgot to say, have set fire to myself once from angle grinding (big grinder, big metal to be ground, lots of sparks) and I counted setting fire to things on the floor eight separate times while welding up the shelf/mezzanine level.

Myself though I use a little Chubb (lol) from Halfords I think it was, not big, easily stored, reusable and cost auond £15, unlike those £10 flamebeaters, which do nothing but splurge a bit of there load over the flames, and thats about it, my mate used about 3 of them to put a small fire out in his van,

Fine. If you ever have a petrol fire, throw water on it, see if I care.

And of course, there is never any waste oil in a motorcyclists lockup. Especially not lying around the place in a variety of open containers.

It was a tongue in cheek comment Wink I am fully aware of what happens with an oil based flame and water

As for the evolution of the English language I totally agree, it has evolved over years and years if that wasnt the case we would all be spoken olde English

I had an old Halon fire extinguisher, marked "Government Property 1965" that possibly saved the life of my Land Rover! I had taken it out on a quick test run when I accidentally left the (transmission) handbrake on after pulling away from a junction, setting it on fire. Luckily I has this ancient fire extinguisher in the back which worked perfectly and put the fire out within a couple of seconds.

Rolling Eyes Could it be that the BTQ website is an English language purist and refuses to accept changes? I personally dislike misuses of phrases in (for example) ebonics and Americanisms. For example the American "I could care less" a misuse of "I couldn't care less" really pisses me off, but in America it is a widely accepted usage, even if it does get on the proverbial goat of English professors.
Misuse or complete ruination, it is still a phrase that is given to mean one of two things and widely accepted to mean the incorrect "modern" usage AND to a lesser extent the correct meaning. In some ways it isn't just an evolution of a phrase but the formation of a language "meme".

i have a 1945 cone shaped one

hasnt worked since about 1946 but me and my mate found it in an old building he was about to demolish so i had it Laughing

think its worth about 200 quid now
