If I ride along at a slow speed in 1st with about half rev's, my bike is very jerky pulling forwards then pulling back, pulling forwards then pulling back etc. Even though I'm holding the accelerator steady and trying to ride smoothly.
In higher gears I can keep the bike going at a constant speed without this happening but if I alter the speed just a little, faster or slower then the bike jumps forwards or pulls sharply back again... bit like a wild stallion!! Laughing

Is there anything I can do about this to make the accelerator smoother and less jumpy?

Thumbs Up

I had this, turned out to be a chain with a tight spot, replaced the chain and it's smooth now, any movement on the throttle sin't particularly smooth but that's just crappy fuelling.

Not sure where you're coming from with that, I always use 1st to pull off anyway. It's at constant speed this happens not on pulling off... Confused

Only very, very occasionally do I stay in 1st when in 3MPH traffic that really is moving at a constant rate that slowly. Know what you mean though, had that a bit with my chinese 125 in 3rd gear occasionally Shocked (Do not buy chinese bikes - just say no)

Can be the chain, carbs/fuel injectors, but also can be your clutch control.

Clutch control?! He's talking about when the gear is fully engaged.

Edit: Ah, that does bring to mind that you should check your clutch cable and linkage. Make sure that your clutch really is fully disengaged.

Spot on. Thumbs Up

There is a little play in the clutch lever when the gear is fully engaged which I'd imagine means the clutch is full disengaged? I'll double check the linkage though, thanks.

Perhaps slip the clutch slightly at the point that you know it will be lumpy?

Well on all my previous bikes I have only ever used 1st gear for pulling off apart from the odd occasion. On my RSV 1st gear is very high so I do have to use it quite allot and unless I feather the clutch it's very jerky.

Thing is I know ways round it, partial clutch, different gears etc, etc. I was just wondering if all/other bikes did this or wether it's specific to my bike and also perhaps if it being a single cylinder thumper would make any difference? i.e. low down power...

I can cope with it easily enough but am just a bit concerned it might be trying to tell me that something's wrong. Like Acemastr said about a tight spot in the chain or Alexio about the clutch linkage etc.

Thumbs Up

I would say it's the bike, my KTM Duke was very similar to how you describe in first, a bit like a bucking bronco!

If it helps, just before I replaced my last chain on my CG (had an epic amount of miles on it) it was stretched in a ton of places and ready to fall off (once or twice it actually skipped off of the back sprocket, much like on a mountain bike).

However, it didn't do what you are describing in first gear. Maybe it was a better chain though Razz

Its one of the TRX's little gems in my eyes. 1st gear is quite long, not snatchy like you've mentioned and even when tapped down into during slow moving traffic it remains smooth and confidence inspiring. I feel confident in taking it through the revs and not worried that the front will lift unlike when on an IL4.

Ive managed to knock it into 1st and go round roundabouts thinking I'm in 2nd and not patted an eyelid. Damn you 5 speed box, still not learnt to count.

At 5,000rpm there is a flat spot on my bike where the engine starts 4 stroking, it's impossible to ride in 1st gear past it.

I've not got around to fixing it yet but it's likely to be the powervalves not being synchronised and one is moving slightly before the other.

Hmm, that makes sense actually, hadn't thought about it much before but single 4 strokes do seem to be uncomfortable staying at an exact amount of revs in some situations... which makes sense because of being a 4 stroke... power delivery every fourth time.

So - your solution is to either weld on another cylinder or convert your engine into a 2 stroke Laughing Laughing

sounds like it is hunting which you get with a lean mixture, maybe a blockage in a fuel filter or carburettor.

Well thanks guys, it does make sense to be related to having a single 4 stroke. I'm not sure I'd love it quite as much if I'd ridden a smoother bike first though, but with this being my first bike I really like the extra grunt I get at low rev's.

fireblade2102, if it's 'hunting' as you mention would it be more likely to do this at other times too, i.e. idling?

Thumbs Up
