Have to say, I do like this. If only it was a capable gaming machine as well.

A while to go yet before I swap my desktop for an Imac. I love my macbook pro 2008 version, incredible build quality and can do some gaming via bootcamp. Plus apple customer support is class.

If they stick a 4870 in one of those things, I could be trading up

You don't get macs?!

It's mostly about how the software and hardware interact together... it just works (and not in a cliché way).

I mean.... I use my mac to record things, my drumming, guitar and my vocals. The sound card (which is amazing quality) works sooo flawlessly with their audio recording and mixing software (garage band) it's just unreal.

There's just no discernible lag in the audio what so ever when I'm listening back to the song so far and recording another track.

Using them for ordinary web browsing and desktop stuff is a joy as well. Back up is amazing, media stuff is amazing, speed and performance is amazing.

If you can get on with the software (it's all quite simple, no reason why not) then you will be at least half way converted (using what ever you're using now and mac as well, like me).

What I'm using now is a 15" Macbook Pro.
It does not 'just work'. Programs crash, it slows down. My usual text editor now says it is not compatible with the OS, despite being fine a month ago.
I'd say it's worse than a well looked after PC, despite mine being a decent spec (4gb ram etc); maybe better than a badly looked after PC, but then I haven't been too bad too it.

Easy enough to get a Windows box to 'just work'.

To do the easy stuff is generally as easy as on Windows, but anything a bit more complex needs use to use a *nix command line generally, including scripting needed in some cases for relatively easy things done in Windows/linux.

I'd have to agree. In my experience when you have a desktop environment that is glitchy, it's more often windows than mac. Both of course are normally fine (they are both for me).

I guess it really is what you use each OS for though. I end up using linux, mac and windows every week without fail.

I'll give it a go, but I'm definitely not the only one to have issues; most of my department at work has them and plenty of people have had similar and a fair bit worse.

Having the native *nix environment is useful for dealing with Linux servers and I do, I admit, find it a bit smoother to use that most Linux variants.

Another suggestion just as a process of elimination would be to create a new User Profile. Logon on and test whether things are working as you would hope. If text editor works on that it could be a preference which might be corrupted linked to text editor or the particular program.

The text editor went wrong after either it or the OS updated it's self, so I'd guess they are out of sync. There's an available copy of Snow Leopard floating around, so might install that at some point - though was avoiding initially as there do seem to be some teething issues.

Anyway, the point being that it doesn't "just work" .
Using Bendy's Dell Mini 9 with XP recently has been a more pleasant experience where it has 'just worked'.

As much as I would love to have one, I cant justify the fact that they are so expensive compared to PC's. For the money it costs for even the basic Imac I could build a very high end PC with money left over!

Personally, i'm fed up with constantly having to help people with windows, things always seem to be going wrong.

On the 'expensive' note, i bought a macbook secondhand 3 years ago, and i'm still using it to this day, got rid of the dell pc i had as it just outdated itself many moons ago.
In the 3 years i've upgraded to 2gigs'a'ram and the other week stuck a bigger hardrive in as i was running out of space (also the drive cloning worked excellently) and its not missed a beat, dispite the fact i never even bother to switch the thing off, i just close the lid and put it in sleep mode, it /still/ has no problem running multiple demanding programs.
I am pretty dam sure in the time i've owned this i would have had 2 or 3 windows variants to keep up with performance.

My XP 1.8GHZ windows system at the previous company got upgraded to 1GB of Ram, but that was about it.
Did everything I needed fine and got turned off once every couple of months or less. I also had a 733MHZ Windows 2000 system treated similarly that was well over five years old and the only thing it really suffered on was complex modern web pages - and that's more of an issue with web architecture all together.

I got the 24" imac about 6 months ago. It's nice and all, but has done nothing to 'convert' me away from my PC. It gets used for video work and that's about it - most of the time it's switched off.

Oh and I bought it a trackball same as my PC's got.
