Hi all,

My friend and i have decided it would be a good laugh to buy a couple of old bikes and do a few "Topgear style" Challenges!

The bikes will be pretty much whatever we can get from e-bay / biketrader etc for around the £200/£300 mark, so we're expecting either some chinese CG copy or old GT550 etc (seen a 1986 Honda VF1000 for £350 that could be ok). The only problem is that i've not got a clue what type of challenges we could do! As we're not intending on keeping the bikes in any kind of useable condition afterwards i was thinking of something off road possibly and maybe a road trip to cornwall (we're in York) etc

I know BCF is a proverbial fountain of knowledge when it comes to "cocking about" on bikes - so thought i'd ask if anyone's got any idea's ???

Cheers
Olly.

You've got to go for a trek! see how many European countries you can visit in a week or before the bike's had it.

Then off road on slicks!

LE to JOG without any tools, or anything that could aid you in fixing the bike if something went wrong.

pick track (say the Nurburg ring or jerez) and see if

a) you can make it there
b) you can do a lap in under a time set by someone on a modern bike
c) ride it back and (if possible) enter it in hare and hounds/bristol beach race/short track race.
d) enter it in a straightliners meeting.

(i'm tempting myself to do it now.)

Set a price so say £300 to buy the bike. What ever money is left over should be used to modify it. Then someone independent votes on which is better. I suggest just ratting it lol.

Longest wheelie or fastest time to Cornwall from York.

First person to get their picture taken with the bike at 5 specified landmarks around Britain.

10 points for first person to crash, 10 points for first bike stolen etc etc lol.

Olly.

I was thinking of getting a few mates together and doing this sort of thing, but in cars. Few hundred quid budget and drive to Paris and back or something. Only trouble is getting them to part with a few hundred quid!! Laughing

Great idea though.

Maybe we should do the BCF challange and open it up to members on here? Wink Thumbs Up

An economy run. One tank of fuel and see how far you get with points for distance traveled.
A track day as dave suggested with points for lap time.
A spot of green laning points awarded for how much of the bike is still in one piece at the end of it and generally for not dying.
A modification challenge where you get 100 to improve your bike. independent judge to verify who's done the most with the dosh.
A stunt challenge. Self explanitory points for not crashing.

we thought about doing it in cars, but then figured bikes would be be a lot more fun and would give us more options on the "challenge front" !

There's quite a few organised rallies for charities for people to do in cars (scally rally, crumball rally, wacky rally etc) but haven't seen anything on bikes - a BCF bodged bike rally could be brilliant !

Only reason I'd want to do it in a car is so the Mrs and daughter can come along too. Thumbs Up

Visit certain landmarks and get pictures.
Pass an MOT without spending any further money (begging free stuff may be allowed).
Enter a sprint.
Do a 100 metre wheelie.
Ride an off-road route (on road bikes).
Enter a concourse style show 'competition'.
Tow a rival bike, a car, more?
Get the most number of people possible 'riding' the bike (feet off the floor) without added metal.

Expanding on the no oil idea, see how far the bikes can go with nasty old chip oil instead of engine oil. Thumbs Up

Wow, many, many people could lose their life all in one go Shocked

Anyway, I would go for the (maybe more boring) challenges of trying to find the most economical bikes (that can use motorways), give yourself a set amount of petrol money (£50?) and try to make it to Spain or something Thumbs Up

FYI, London to Madrid is 1068 miles. At 100MPG ish £50 would get you there.... but if it was a race?

Now that would be interesting.

Thanks Chaps !!

Some really good ideas there...

Neither of us can wheelie so that could be a good place to start - as i'm sure on a sh1tbox bike we'd have no worries trying and binning the bikes!!

Track Day and Green laning should good too - think it can all revolve around a winning points, with the winner getting to keep the bikes at the end maybe, or whatevers left of them!

Karma dished out !

Thank you all!

Olly.

As you live in York......

If they still do run what you brung at Elvinton Smile

Fill bikes up and seal tank.
Start with that see who can get the fastest.
Then off to Cafe at Sherbern for a brew and then its off to ace cafe.

You would need to set a time you need to arrive, but remember that you have to do this without filling up.
Plenty of BCF member who can bail you out if you fail....

Don't wish to sound too curmudgeonly, but £300 is a lot of wedge and so should get you a nice bike.

Instead of trashing what others might see as viable and fun transport, why not just run these bikes for a year and get back into contact with what motorcycling always used to be about?

Of course if you still want extra thrills then find a local bike meet with a nearby slowish roundabout and have enormous fun stuffing it up the inside of poorly ridden R1's, Gixxers etc...

What my flatmate and I have been toying with doing for a while is buying a bike & car and driving from Lands end to John O'Groats. The main criteria is the price tag of £280 (the price of a single ticket) and the 24 hours and 30 minutes time limit (the time it takes to get from one end to the other).

To take directly from top gear, you also have to sell the bike at the end of all the challenges getting as much of the money back as possible, this could either be in pieces or even as a working bike!

Edit: Fixed a spelling mistake

You should have £300 to buy a bike and ride it from one end of the country to the other. The £300 must cover all fuel costs and other bits. Then you have to sell it for £300 or more.

Well, we’ve got an idea of what we’re gonna be doing (although I’m sure this will change numerous times) and have decided that it’ll be done at the back end of this year (august / September time – ish) now all we need is find the funds.. and we’re off!

We’ve even got a bit of a website going too – somewhere we can put photos / updates and generally just to keep track of what we’ve done and have got left to do.

www.momoto.co.uk – (Momoto is the name of the company that will one day, make myself and my mate Matt very rich.. or at least the name of the company that we would use if either of us get a decent idea that’s worth trying to sell ! )

(I know the website is very basic, and I’m sure my 2 year old daughter could have done a better job – but it’s a start, and was knocked together in about 1.5 hours one night when bored, so no piss taking!!)

Cheers
Olly.

To be honest, this started off as me and a mate just trying to think of somthing interesting to do this year... then my dad said he's join us, then a couple of mates!

So no reason why not !! it's all just a bit of fun at the end of the day, the more the merrier!
