getting a cat C on the road

recently purchased a new bike from a breakers that was rated as a cat C

anyway the bike runs fine and the damage is just cosmetic, im getting it delivered on thursday. to get it on the road i need to get an mot which is fine. but how do i go about getting the logbook for the bike? how do i prove that its mine? the person at the breakers told me its £25 from the dvla but how do i go about getting the forms etc.

also since it needs an mot to be used on the roads, will my insurers insure me before it gets an mot? will i be able to ride it to the mot station? or do i have to get it transported to the mot place, get its mot, then the insurer will cover it?

also i plan to powdercoat the wheels white, however the tyres are pretty much brand new and was unsure whether they will just rip the tyres off or if they remove and put them back on.

any help would be appreciated.

Insurance will cover you for riding to/from the MOT station

Post office will have the forms you need for getting the V5, not sure if you can do it online might be a wee while due to postage strikes, not sure of there is a local office that can do the same to save posting it.

For powder coating I think you have to give them the bare wheels, but I think white wheels may be too much, looks good as is

Not sure if bike will need tested/inspected by dvla

I've recently had my cbr written off as a cat c, got it back from insurers with the engineers report, and it was only written off on cosmetic damage as the fairing needed "replacing" and would cost to much, i stripped it back to frame and engine and got the panels repaired and sprayed, had the forks checked (they were straight as a die) got it mot'd and put back on the road, simples.

As for powder coating, i had mine done and the powder coaters needed bare wheels so i removed the bearings and disks and got my local tyre fella to take the tyres off, he re-fitted them after, most powder coaters should be able to shot blast the old paint off.

paid £1200 for it, probs a bit much considering its a cat C but i love the paint job and underseat exhaust so felt it was worth it.

according to the guys profile on the zx7r forums he had done the following

ignition advancer, float bowl, hid bulbs, side stand, underseat exhaust, triboseat grippy cover, white clock dials, green LED strips

led strips is going straight away, you can see them where the grab rails are meant to be.

has braided lines front and back, new front indicators and the rear indicators are built into the led light at the back, unsure how that will go in the mot tho as half the brake light with be flashing orange when stopping and turning. underseat exhaust looks really good and dsnt seem off at all, apart from having the pipe on the outside of the swingarm. also it appears to have nissin calipers in the big picture, cant remember if it has them on it still but cant see why not as the brakes were working when i checked the bike out so doubt he'd bleed in the new calipers.



was worried about riding the bike to mot station incase insurers would say no but glad to hear its ok. dont see much it can fail on that cant be fixed easily, fairings are not too hard to do, indicators stuck back on properly, mirrors, foothanger etc are straight replacment jobs so pretty easy. only problems i can forsee is the exhaust and the rear indicators but the place i go to is pretty decent so shouldnt fail, i hope.

downpipes were a bit rusty but they wernt blowing so should be just a cleaning job. also its battery is pretty dead, bike was crashed over a month ago so had been sitting for a while but my friend will lend me his car batttery charger for it. the wheels on them now are pretty rubbish tbh, it looks like bare metal, its hard to notice in the pic.

I bought my divvy as a CAT C.

Forms for applying for the logbook can be downloaded from the direct.gov website. Fill them in, enclose your £25 and wait. I had to wait about 5 weeks but there were no questions asked, they didn't ask for proof of ownership or any sort of receipt.

I was unsure as to weather it needed a VIC check or not but a quick call to the DVLA confirmed it didn't as the VIC only applies to cars.

Got it insured, booked it for an MOT and rode it to the test station. You're allowed to ride without an MOT to the test station as long as you have insurance and as long as the MOT has been pre arranged, you can't ride there without having booked it first.

Got my MOT, rode to the post office and taxed it with the logbook and bobs your mothers brother, all done.

Theres just too much pipe on show that doesn't quite follow any lines other bendy ones.

A small stuby growler stylee one would look a lot better.

I know what you mean, but really, its not that bad!

One of my projects this winter is fitting a 2008 ZX10 swingarm to the 750, nice and chunky looking. So I want to move the can out the way so you can see more of it!

What downpipes are they? They dont look stock?

What about mods to the sub frame, what was needed?

I'm running a full Muzzy on mine, that might look nice with the ZX10 swinger! Very tempting!

Do you have any more pics of it without the seat unit on and of the underside of it?

Couldn't tell if they were std downpipes or not, pretty solid; were they stainless as std? Know the ZXR ones rotted very quickly.

Guy did a not too bad job of it, using the std light bracket to hold the plate at the back and also having a place to bolt the can strap too. Should've taken some photos when I was packing the exhaust for the MOT...it was quite loud...

im tempted to paint the pipes black to keep the black/white colour scheme going. if i ever bothered to strip it down enough i might get the subframe and frame painted black as well as the bottem of the forks and the swingarm.

im not a fan of the pipe going over the swingarm but the underseat exhaust looks good though.

ok the bike is going pretty good now, electrics will hopefully be sorted tonight and sending fairings off to be repaired.

however im now wondering about the logbook, iv'e sent away for the logbook but can i not use it until it comes through the post?
