'Knowing' had a pretty miserable ending, every fvcker bar a handful of kids died. On the entire planet.

Looks like it's going to rely on huge budget special effects and a very weak storyline and actors to me, like most disaster movies. I would'nt get excitied, wait for it to be on TV, maybe in 2012.

Another way to tell a crap movie is an amazing looking trailer, shown you the entire budget already to get you to watch it as reviews certainly won't once it's out.

What probably will be good, is Avatar.

What I'd like to know is exactly what 'they' mean by "The Mayan calander ends on 23rd dec 2012! Ooer!"

What the fvck does that mean? The world ends on that date? Or they ran out of stone-cutting tools? Or just got fvcking bored cutting a never-ending series of dates into said stones? What's the most advanced date we have printed anywhere in our world currently? I suppose archeologists of the future will look at that and go "Ooer, look, they stopped writing/printing dates on that date, must mean the world will end then..."

What is actually the case is archeologists have found loads of stones from the Mayan culture with dates on them, the most recent of which is dec 23rd 2012, with a half-legible fragment of something big supposed to be happening on that date. Who's to say there aren't more, as yet undiscovered, stones with dates more recent than that cut into them?

Or do 'they' mean the Mayan system of time was such it couldn't accomodate a date further than dec 23rd 2012? So maybe they figured "Lots of time left in which to work out a new system that'll take us past that point, when we need it...which won't be until 2012..."

The "event" they speak of would appear to be nothing more than the astronomical one, which occurs every 26,000 years (all the planets and the sun lining up with the centre of our galaxy at the same time as they're in it's eliptical plane). Supposedly this is going to cause catastrophic effects of one sort and/or another, which tie in to ancient legends of previous catastrophes, which coincidentally could have taken place around 26,000 years ago (sinking of Atlantis, the great flood etc). Certainly it does seem almost sure that something very big and bad happened in human pre-history.

But blah blah, it'll either be another big bag of fvckall, or something extremely damaging but survivable (solar flares knocking out electricity, satellites etc) or something majorly catastrophic (huge earthquakes and tsunami etc). Could be interesting, but if nothing happens at all I reckon it'll be the end of predictions for the rest of human time.

Hardly "coincidence", considering the fragment that explicitly outlined some sort of huge bad event on the date in question.

It may well be that the history of the preceding 26,000 years was better known to the Mayans than it is to us. We actually know next to fvckall. We're still taught the Sphinx and Pyramids are no more than 5000 years old, when the Sphinx has wear on it caused by torrential rain over a very long period of time that last featured in that area over 20,000 years ago.

You might be interested in the "Novelty Theory" put forward by Terence McKenna inspired by his use of DMT. The arseholes on wikipedia have packaged it all together under "2012 phenomenon" thereby reducing it to a fucking paragraph when before it had a whole page dedicated to it which was rather in-depth. Read around the net anyway, he basically came up with the same date, and this was several years before they discovered the mayan calendar IIRC, so it's intriguing if nothing else.

I had a quick read elsewhere, seems he calculates various events into his time-wave schedule, most of which don't quite fit and most of which are just events, no more or less significant than others that don't fit into his time-wave schedule.

At this point I'm pretty open-minded either way. The lack of any momentous event in recorded history makes believing in anything out of the ordinary hard to accept but there has to be (another) first time.

The problem is that a film which lives by its special effects really has to be seen in the cinema to appreciate those effects. Just ordered an unlimited cinema pass, so I'll no doubt see it when it's released.

Every 200 years, sure. But how often at the same time as the solar-system hits dead-centre on the galaxy's eliptical-plane? Once every 26,000 years.

Just went to see it and it was quite good. Storyline pretty laughable and basically did the different takes on the same theme (escaping danger in a plane) a fair few times. Got a bit heroicy towards the end and to me it looked as thought the shooting was a bit more low-budgety looking rather than high res panoramic shots.

Still I like explosions and human woe and what not so I thought it was good on that front. Some pretty cool effects but ultimately let down by being to happy and ignoring some real life effects. For instance, when a supervolcano like Yellowstone blows its top, theres is worldwide ash coverage for months and months let alone clear skies after 3 weeks.

I'd still reccomend seeing it.

cinema is a rip off now its like 7 quid+ in some places you can get the dvd for 9 and its not that hard to buy a projector and sound surround

Yeah I wanted to download it but I resisted the temptation cos I know that disaster films need a proper system to get the full effect.

I saw Knowing first in the cinema then on DVD at home a bit later on.

Stuff like plane crashes is waay better on the big screen than anything I could rustle up at home. To be honest tho, I dont go that often so paying 6.50 is something I dont mind.
