Ok so I have started to ride the Hornet less now that the winter is kicking in.

I don't want to store it away properly as I'd still like to use it on nicer days of winter.

At the moment it is fairly clean, under a cover in the back of my garden.

Would it be ok like this for the rest of the winter or would bits start seezing up and slowly rottting. There is a fairly good coverage of ACF-50 on it.

Does the cold weather only damage bikes when you are actively using the bike?

Thanks!

Tim.

Fuel cock off, oil change before storing it and it should be ok. Make sure you go out and start it, leaving it running for a while every week or so. Probably be a good idea to give it a good wash first. Never stored a bike over winter but these are the things I wish I would have done when I left my old 125 to rot in the garage! Laughing

If you can turn off the fuel do and try to run it with the fuel off till it dies as fuel goes off so quick these days and you'll find it hard to start when theres mankey fuel floating around in the engine, and as said give it a crank over every so often.

I just bunged some fuel stabiliser in a full tank of fuel, got the engine hot, let it cool off then covered it up.

I also pushed the pistons into the brake calipers, and moved the pads away from the discs, as they'll rust to the disc otherwise!

I left my old cb500 outside under a cover for about 6 months (over a winter) as I couldn't afford to do the work to get it through the MOT.

When I went back to it I had to replace the battery but as soon as I'd done that it started first time.

I reckon if you're gonna ride it once a week, you don't really need to do a lot - just don't cover it if it's wet as it will trap in the moisture and cause corrosion.

That doesn't actually do the bike a lot of good - either take it for a decent run or don't start it at all.

Yeah, if you just leave it running by trying to keep it going you're just wasting the battery if you're using it in short bursts. Thats what happened with my speedfight. I started it once a month and it just killed the battery, had to replace it.

Do nothing other than keep it under a cover and clean all the salty shite off it if you get salty shite all over it. It'll be absolutely fine.

I have just checked my old bike today, after storing since September.

There was some rust on the chain, that soon came off and I had to lube / waxed it.

The front break disc was covered in rust! that also seems to come off after a good scrub but is there anything I can do prevent this?

The thinking is that

a) the bike takes much longer to get up to temperature when it's just idling, which increases wear
b) it takes an awfully long time to recharge the battery to replace the energy taken by starting the bike. Better to get a battery optimiser.
c) if the bike doesn't get properly up to temperature corrosive exhaust gases will tend to condense inside the exhaust system

Leave it. As soon as you apply the brake when you ride it again it will rub off.

Well, if you do start it make sure you do some proper rides once the engine is warm Thumbs Up It's all or nothing baby.
