Cracked fairings :-(

Ive noticed a crack in my fairings, its out of the way, but i dont want it splitting any more.

Whats the best way to mend it? What to use?

Which side can/do i repair it from. inner (engine side) or exterior side? Mending it from the outside would certainly be alot easier, as its in a trickey position.

Its out of the way, and wont need painting afterwards, as it really cant be noticed.

Any other tips. Thanks people!

if you want to go all the way you can plastic weld it on the inside and use p38 on the outside and then sand it down and touch up the area

Tell me about plastic weld...

Would superglue be ok? or araldite?

Read a report in a bike mag recently ( can't remember which one ), they reckoned that superglue was good but the best results they got were by using a soldering iron on the back of the fairing to "spot weld" the crack to hold it together then run the soldering iron down the crack to weld it together. If there is no damage to the outside you probably won't notice the crack, otherwise plastic padding and a touch-up/respray.

I bough some Araldite, so i think ill use that on the back of the fairing piece becasue it really strong.

Then ill use superglue on the front on the piece becasue its more precision, and ill get a better finish...

Nice one deputy! Im sure a few people will find that usefull (I know I will, Ive got a crack running down one of my side panels).

Also if your useing the soldering iron method (they are only like £5 anyways) cable ties can be melted on allong the join

found builders sylicone is quite good very strong but also stays a little flexible may stop it cracking again with vibrations etc.
Screwfix direct do it for 2or 3 pounds

I have found that a gas powered iron with a heat blower tip,an old knife and a normal soldering iron is great for fixing panels.

Do as the others have said, i.e spot weld in place, run the iron along the crack, then get the gas powered iron with a heat blower tip and start to melt bits of plastic and push them into the grove you made with the normal iron with the old knife

Any tips on filling in missing parts of the fairing? How can I get a section that's had a scrape looking new?

Isn't there something like polyfiller that would work for fairings? I don't mean actual polyfiller but something that does the same job for plastics/fibreglass.

You can get fibre glass filler and webbing for cracks and scratches, but this is more about cheap fixes without messing about

OOPS, posted in wrong thread - dumbass....

this is not actually a crack or chip that can be fixed with silicone or bunging up, its actually on the top edge next to the screen (in fact a bit of the screen came off with it too) so its a bit of a wierd bit to patch..

I think on other scratches on the bike I will use the sticker idea though Now I will have a look for a set of random pairs of stickers

Also to add, I keep seeing them on ebay but so far have not found the correct colour paint (teal) I think eventually I will replace it anyhow though

I generally use araldite if it's a quick bodge, I use a dremal to make little v shape grooves down the crack line, then use the dremal again to remove paint and generally rough up the surrounding area then fill with araldite.

I've used the soldering iron method before but make sure you remove paint from the area first else it'll get stick in the repair and cause air bubbles etc
