1. Manage ( in my own kack handed fashion ) a shop. Retail work can be considered, by some, the lowest of the low but I have always had a natural ability to get on with anyone and it does make me reasonably good at what I do.
2. Usually massively stressed juggling unreliable suppliers and demanding customers.
3. Apart from the old 'it pays the bills' I do find it quite rewarding to know that the customer has had the best service it's possible to receive in this day and age. I do very much enjoy being absolutely honest with people to, it's something they don't expect in retail and can take them back a bit. ____________________ And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

1).What job do you do and why do you do it?
Electrician, I served my time as a Machine Tool Engineer, when I had my interview for my current job they let me pick either the electrical or mechanical test. Chose the sparks one and here I am.
2) What mindset do you have when you`re there?
You need very thick skin.
I can be pretty intense if we have a major machine breakdown that causes any "downtime". That can cost us millions and put us on zero day rate, our current day rate is $140,000, other units are between $64,000 and $648,000. Some people seem to think that shouting and screaming will get a job done and they get very frustrated if you don't run about like a blue arsed fly.
List of Day Rates:

So there is a lot of money at stake, tensions and stress levels can run very high, so you have to perform to keep getting contracts.
You are away from your family for 28 days at a time and that can be quite hard especially if they are having a hard time at home, its hard to say and explain but I tend to block out whats going on at home (within reason of course) as it can take you mind off the job and start to affect other people around you if you are moping about. There is not much sympathy out here. Our Indian storeman was found unconscious at his desk and medivac'd off to recuperate in hospital for 5 days in Ho Chi Minh City. He was docked 1 weeks wage for being off work! So that's the kind of attitude that's in my company at the moment.
My old place in the UK was good because I got on very well with the Supervisor and Mechanic so much so that they were at my wedding reception. Now I'm out abroad it's a lot more difficult to fit in. It's not too bad here but I have heard horror stories of some places being so insular that the guy had to transfer, mainly due to Australians, they can be very cliquey. You cant just go home at night at have a wee whisky and relax, you are stuck here living with them for a month. So you have to do your best to get along with everybody.
3) What do you get out of it?
A wage and air miles. But I do enjoy the job, I like knowing that I've fixed something and solved a problem. I find that sort of fault finding quite rewarding.
Plus you do meet some of the craziest people and see some funny shit happening around you. ____________________ Current; 10' Aprilia Dorsoduro 750.

1. Product Steward for an Oilfeild Chemical company. Not been in the role long -worked in the yard for same company for the previous 8 years.
2. Half and half. When something needs done i will make sure it is done to the best of my ability but the job is quite up and down so i get plenty of time for BCF and ebay most days. The warehouse also make an ideal workshop for bike and car tinkering
3. Money to pay the bills. Hopefully more money in the future now that i am office based and actually learning stuff again instead of standing around a freezing cold yard throwing buckets of nasty stuff into tanks and hooning around on forklifts day in day out! ____________________ Harold_Shand wrote: I suppose it's like anything, you get your fingers burned when you start out, you learn from it and eventually become a complete arsehole about the whole thing. |

1) A vet.
2) Get todays jobs done. Not really much actual work for me to do in "downtime" so if I've finished doing what's in the daybook and caught up on people to call/records to write up, my boss has no problemn with me sitting in the back office sleeping/surfing/drinking tea/reading.
We share an on-call rota on a straight 1 in 3. I try very hard not to drop the other two in it, they do the same for me. Our last assistant had an unbelievable amount of sick-time which a) I don't believe because it too often co-incided with something she didn't want to do and b) Leaves me and the boss taking up the slack.
I have never had a day off sick in the 9 years I've been working here.
3) Variety, there are some boring, repetative jobs but not too many. Getting out and about. A mental challenge, you see at least one thing you've never seen before on a weekly basis. Pays the bills. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

God how did you manage that? I seem to be sick all the time, although my health overall isn't great these days.
Next on tonight's news - can sticking your hand up a cow's bum really cure the common cold? |
I don't take a day off work just because I have a cold. There have been a few occasions (count on the fingers of one hand) where I'm really not up to it, but I go in and tell my boss that I'm not well. I do the less strenuous jobs and go home when I've finished, ensuring that the other two aren't totally rushed off their feet. They do the same for me, I appreciate it and let them away home when I reckon I can cope with what's left. Most of our jobs can't be put off, they still have to be done.
I even came into work when I broke my heel (dropped the bike on it, footpeg landed on my heel). We just rearranged things for a few weeks so I could do the jobs that didn't involve much walking about.
People go on about not going in if you have a cold but really, how many times when a cold is going about do you not catch it anyway? Better to get it over and done with is my oppinion.
That said, my immune system is pretty robust, I get exposed to a lot of pretty disgusting things and also have direct contact with members of the public on a regular basis. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Here is an email exchange I had recently that explains the questions in the OP.

Subject: ******1 Printer next to the break area
Hello.
Just a quick note to let you know the printer mentioned above is currently out of order. There was a paper jam which I cleared with the Designated Project Team Scissors. Although the paper jam issue has been resolved, while applying this efficacious fix to the initial fault; I seem to have rendered the printer more permanently inoperable; a state of affairs I can only blame on the team scissors.
I have logged a call with the CSD mentioning only the salient details.
In the meantime, ****e is available to service your printing needs as usual. If you need any settings changed, don't hesitate to get in touch. I promise to leave the scissors in the team drawer.
Thanks

That went out to the whole department. I received this response which I should say was meant in a sarcastic light, it's hard enough to instil a sense of irony in plain text as it is. Someone apparently complained about it, but I told them to stow it, it wasn't meant in a nasty way.

Hi Pa_broon74,
As the designated IT support body you could hardly be expected to know this, but I believe you may find that ****e is the NP printer and L***n is in fact the preferred choice for our department.
It may also come as a shock to discover that H**** W**** has retired and L*** W**** has not been working here for some months!
ps. If you rotate your chair 180 degrees, you may also notice a space where P*** W****** was sitting. (Ed: PW was never here anyway...)
Regards,
|
It refers to people who've left but I forgot to update the genereic mail lists, not really my job but... Again, it wasn't meant in a bad way, it was supposed to be sarcastic.
My response was...
| Quote: |
Hi.
In my (diminished) capacity as designated IT support professional, ****e has been the official S&I printer set up as a replacement for ******1. I forget which printer is for NP usage, it's either ****h or ****n. (Since there's been no fist fights in the photocopy room, I don't think it's a huge issue.)
As to the souls who have since departed, although H**** W**** is sorely missed and (frankly) it's hard to tell the difference re. P*** W*****; I shall endeavour to make the proper alterations to the generic mailing lists.
I frequently rotate my chair at speed and in excess of 180 degrees, just for fun. However, I am always more than happy to halt my gyrations in order to furnish S&I staff with first rate IT solutions.
Thanks
Pa_broon74.

I've starred out words that might identify people and the organisation. Suffice to say, I sometimes have alot of time on my hands...
