1) I'm a scientist, specifically a biochemist, working on a drug discovery program

2) I have to concentrate very hard when I'm actually working, but I can take breaks almost whenever I feel like I need one. That's when I browse BCF!

3) When I first started I didn't enjoy it very much. It's hard work and I had vague notions of doing something more literary. So much so in fact that I dropped out of science for a while to try writing at home. It turned out I was useless at it. Not that I ever got to find out if my writing was any good - the part I was useless at was motivating myself do actually do some! I finally admitted to myself that it just wasn't in me and was very lucky to be be offered an opportunity to return to science.

After that I think my attitude improved a lot. I am much happier at work and much more driven. I think it's showed as well since I recently got my old boss's job.

Plus there is the tiniest chance we will find a new treatment for cancer.

1. Manage ( in my own kack handed fashion ) a shop. Retail work can be considered, by some, the lowest of the low but I have always had a natural ability to get on with anyone and it does make me reasonably good at what I do.

2. Usually massively stressed juggling unreliable suppliers and demanding customers.

3. Apart from the old 'it pays the bills' I do find it quite rewarding to know that the customer has had the best service it's possible to receive in this day and age. I do very much enjoy being absolutely honest with people to, it's something they don't expect in retail and can take them back a bit.

1).What job do you do and why do you do it?

Electrician, I served my time as a Machine Tool Engineer, when I had my interview for my current job they let me pick either the electrical or mechanical test. Chose the sparks one and here I am.


2) What mindset do you have when you`re there?

You need very thick skin.

I can be pretty intense if we have a major machine breakdown that causes any "downtime". That can cost us millions and put us on zero day rate, our current day rate is $140,000, other units are between $64,000 and $648,000. Some people seem to think that shouting and screaming will get a job done and they get very frustrated if you don't run about like a blue arsed fly.

So there is a lot of money at stake, tensions and stress levels can run very high, so you have to perform to keep getting contracts.
You are away from your family for 28 days at a time and that can be quite hard especially if they are having a hard time at home, its hard to say and explain but I tend to block out whats going on at home (within reason of course) as it can take you mind off the job and start to affect other people around you if you are moping about. There is not much sympathy out here. Our Indian storeman was found unconscious at his desk and medivac'd off to recuperate in hospital for 5 days in Ho Chi Minh City. He was docked 1 weeks wage for being off work! So that's the kind of attitude that's in my company at the moment.
My old place in the UK was good because I got on very well with the Supervisor and Mechanic so much so that they were at my wedding reception. Now I'm out abroad it's a lot more difficult to fit in. It's not too bad here but I have heard horror stories of some places being so insular that the guy had to transfer, mainly due to Australians, they can be very cliquey. You cant just go home at night at have a wee whisky and relax, you are stuck here living with them for a month. So you have to do your best to get along with everybody.

3) What do you get out of it?

A wage and air miles. But I do enjoy the job, I like knowing that I've fixed something and solved a problem. I find that sort of fault finding quite rewarding.
Plus you do meet some of the craziest people and see some funny shit happening around you.

1) Studying scientist (Honours year)
2) Do work early, drink longer.
3) A decent honours degree hopefully. Plus the option to continue further academically. My degree is also pretty useful considering my location, as there are plenty of scientist positions in the oil companies in Aberdeen, thought I haven't completed the "Oilfield chemistry" module yet to know if I'd actually enjoy it.

1. Product Steward for an Oilfeild Chemical company. Not been in the role long -worked in the yard for same company for the previous 8 years.

2. Half and half. When something needs done i will make sure it is done to the best of my ability but the job is quite up and down so i get plenty of time for BCF and ebay most days. The warehouse also make an ideal workshop for bike and car tinkering

3. Money to pay the bills. Hopefully more money in the future now that i am office based and actually learning stuff again instead of standing around a freezing cold yard throwing buckets of nasty stuff into tanks and hooning around on forklifts day in day out!

1) A vet.

2) Get todays jobs done. Not really much actual work for me to do in "downtime" so if I've finished doing what's in the daybook and caught up on people to call/records to write up, my boss has no problemn with me sitting in the back office sleeping/surfing/drinking tea/reading.

We share an on-call rota on a straight 1 in 3. I try very hard not to drop the other two in it, they do the same for me. Our last assistant had an unbelievable amount of sick-time which a) I don't believe because it too often co-incided with something she didn't want to do and b) Leaves me and the boss taking up the slack.

I have never had a day off sick in the 9 years I've been working here.

3) Variety, there are some boring, repetative jobs but not too many. Getting out and about. A mental challenge, you see at least one thing you've never seen before on a weekly basis. Pays the bills.

The billls been payed at the end of the week.

Really need a change of career. Something thats a bit more enjoyable.
