I have a '98 CG, and the centre stand has decided to give up. When I put the bike on the stand, it leans, as if it were on a side stand, so I'm not able to park anywhere public in case it falls on someone or something. Apparently, the bit of the frame that the stand chocks up against has bent.

I have been given a couple of different opinions on how to fix it, but I'm not sure which would be best, if any. One guy told me to cut away the bent section of the frame, put a metal rod through it to reinforce it, and weld it back on. Would this welded area be a weak point in the bikes frame? Another guy said to get a piece of metal and tap it in against the frame so the stand chocks against that instead of the frame.

Any other opinions or ideas on this would be helpful.

can you post picture?

what about just giving it a good whack with a hammer see if you can bend it back or heating it up and trying to pry it back how it should be (or take it to a welders and have them do it)

It is an option, but surely bending it back down would weaken the frame? Also, it wouldn't stop the frame from bending in the future. I want to get it fixed as best I can, as I won't be getting a new bike for a year or two.

You'll probably find it's failed due to rust, you'll need to get down there amongst the grime and have a good poke.

Presume you don't have a side stand? I'd look at sorting a side stand and ignore the centre stand personally.
The centre stand on my CG got a bit bent, then kept touching down while cornering, so I just took it off.

I think a side stand from a CBR125 will fit your model, honda wanted about £65 all in to supply all the bits needed when I enquired a few years ago. CBR was new out so wasn't many in the breakers when I needed one

Various side stands going from about £20 upwards.

When I got the bike, I took it to the bike garage down the road and enquired about getting a side stand. I was told that it wouldn't accomodate a side stand. Looking at it, I can't see where it would attach.

I can only park on pretty uneven ground at work (not entirely true, but I choose to keep it off the road out of bad drivers way) and found that the centre stand was not so good and I soon tired of trying to find a suitable place that it was level enough to keep it stable

I went on eBay and just bought the cheapest motorcycle sidestand I could (was £5 IIRC) and welded it to the foot peg bar that runs under the engine at a suitable angle that didn't interfere with the chain when folded up and enough lean to keep it stable when down

It worked out Ok for me, but how much of that was luck I don't know

If you have acces to or know someone with a welder (or take a bag of doughnuts to somewhere that does welding) and a suitable stand I wouldn't have thought it would cost much to modify or graft one on

It is a bit of a pain to take the footpeg bar off (means disturbing the exhaust to unthread it on my Brazillian) but was a job worth doing

When I bought the old CG125 S to do up - it already had a sidestand attached to the footpeg bar so they are out there

It looks like theres a few footpeg bar things on eBay at the moment and at least one of them has a bracket already attached (but no stand looking at the picture)

Maybe worth an ask to the seller to see if they know the whereabouts of the sidestand and spring?

I don't think I have used the center stand since adding the side stand, but I guess it will come in handy come oil change/service time

Regards
Rob

Stupid question... but would it be possible to attach a bit of metal or wood underneath, on the side of the centre stand that's now not reaching the ground properly from being bent?

One of my CG's had "torn" the bottom mount where the lowest rear engine bolt goes through- and snapped the through hole on the engine casing
It also had skewed and splayed where the center stand goes through
(I don't think this bike had had very careful owners!)

This is on the "S" model I have and involved stripping down to the frame and bending everything back in line and welding it back together

It didn't come with a center stand, but I could imagine it would have been pretty useless at holding the bike upright....worth checking the lower part of the frame whilst your down there

Well, the standard procedure is have a poke around, then fix or replace the bit that's knackered Smile

You can add a side stand by replacing the entire footpeg carrier with one from an earlier model (hopefully a less rusty one...). The older carrier has the mount for the sidestand that's missing from newer models (cost saving exercise, I imagine). Bolt off/bolt on job.
