selling in winter fact or fiction..

Is it a fact of life that bikes go for less in winter? or a myth perpetuated by people wanting money off?

Need to sell the blade but not sure on whether to wait till spring, not in a rush for the money but the bike does need to go. So, should i wait till spring or spend money now advertising?

of course its not fiction, have you seen the silly prices some bikes go for during winter? There isn't enough demand during winter to get top prices.

Depend on how old it is: newer bikes depreciate faster than older ones, especially if there's a new model due out. So waiting 6 months may lose more value than the difference between winter and spring selling.

It's a fact. These car driving weekend riders are often desperate to offload their summer toy once the weather turns chilly. Which is fantastic news for tightwads and bargain hunters Very Happy

I've picked up some great buys in the depths of winter.

yeah I think your right, i was kinda hoping that with the weak pound it might still be awash with foreign buyers looking for a bargain. Sure i read something about it in an MCN at some point.

Bike sales are lower in autumn and winter so there's less market/more competition. Also some people sell off their bikes in order to generate funds for Christmas.

Supply and demand. Less people and TBH theres a lot less people getting the 'urge' to get another when its as cold as it is.

Depends on the bike and market conditions. I'm having my yearly craving to buy a CB250RS at the moment, but I can't find any. Earlier in the year there were 4 or 5 on ebay at any given time and so prices were low.
Prices of something like a newish R6 will be lower than in summer, because there are always loads of them for sale. Competition is the key.

onlly affects bikes from 06 onwards generally.
affects sports bikes more but has no affect on older sports bikes.
rare bikes like tarty gixxers/ ducatis/ vintage bikes dont get affected.

(by tarty gixxers i dont mean a race can and a double bouble. im talking at least a grands worth of mods)

Does depend on the bike though, sports bikes seem to get it in the neck the worst, that Gixxer thou is a good example whilst a T595 I was keeping an eye on suffered even worse, the guy selling it was hoping for 1800, when I went to look at it I suggested he might manage 1500 but that I would wait and see how the ebay listing went first, it barely cleared a grand (1070 to be exact) Shocked

Sports tourers and typical winter hacks don't seem to fluctuate so much though, I'd wager I could sell the GS without losing a penny on it. Still I finally managed to land a nice low mileage ZX9r F with a few tasteful toys on it to boot, not quite as cheap as I'd hoped at 3300 but eh, it's hardly run in and the tyres are fresh so I'm not complaining Smile
