Dodged a bullet today

Wondered what that strange clicking noise was for the past few weeks!!! Thought it was the slightly hooked teeth on the front sprocket and was planning to change the chain and sprockets anyway. Looks like I will have to do them sooner.

Didn't notice this last week, when I cleaned, adjusted and greased the chain, but have had a clicking coming through the pegs for a while now. I guess that it could have been snapped for a while but has only recently opened up like that (since the last adjustment)

Anyhoo, thought I'd share with the community as a reminder to do those daily checks.... And I'm also doing the lotto this week for defo.... Thumbs Up

Ouch. Although I would be surprised if that has been like that "the past few weeks". Might be worth a good look to find if something has damaged it (ie, something else making the noise).

What make of chain is it by the way?

I had a link half snap on me last year, felt a sudden click, but it was just before I stopped 100 yards down the road for a brew, looked down at the chain and nearly wet myself as we had been doing a few mph over posted on some very tight country roads.

I had the a similar thing happen earlier this year although not quite as bad as that. Was trying to patch up a small exhaust leak when I noticed the link directly behind the area I was working on was cracked although it hadn't opened up like the one in the pic above.

Very very paranoid about chains now because of that.

Best thing i've bought since I changed the chain was a loobman, only adjusted the new chain once in about 6000 miles since I put it on.

Still really paranoid though Crying or Very sad

I had a very similar thing happen on my hornet several months back. Noticed the damage when cleaning my bike. The chain and sprockets had been clunking on acceleration too - up to about 40mph. My front sprocket was hooked like your's. I thought it was ok as it was only slightly hooked but apparently if it's hooked at all then it's fucked!

I think this damage was caused by the chain jumping off the front sprocket.

I can't remember what make the chain was but I think it may have been standard (on my hornet - so a D.I.D).

The very last thing I am paranoid about is my chain. Whats the worst that can happen?!

Sometime this year in the summer I was told by a mechanic that under no circumstances was I allowed to ride my bike on any long journeys out of town or go very fast as my chain and sprokets badly needed to be changed. My chain was stretched in several places and my back wheel couldn't be adjusted any further to make the chain tight enough to where it was supposed to be.

Well, I was broke so I ignored him completely and rode the 400 miles to glastonbury and back at about 65 - 70MPH and had one of the best rides of my life (first time I ventured to overtake everything in my way and filter past a 5 mile dual carriage way traffic jam).

Still, at least I was examining my chain often and very thoroughly and I will continue to do so. This thread points out why such a precaution is so important! Thumbs Up

I guess what I'm also saying is that Honda make some pretty trustworthy chains. Very Happy

OK, I am not 100% certain that this was purely caused by the chain (and that there wasn't some pre existing damage that made it susceptable to this damage), but check the results of a chain snapping on Wildgooses Triumph Tiger:-

Chains do snap occasionally. Most of the time people get away with it. Sometimes there is some engine damage. Very occasionally they might get injured (although that does likely require the chain to move sideways when the end flings out).

Met a guy at the bikers cafe in Aldershot (forgot the name of it) who had an artificial foot. He said the accident where he lost his foot was caused by the chain snapping. Anecdotal evidence but a scary story none the less

A chain snapping can have massive consequences, physical and financial. An RTA that a good friend of mine was involved in was from an FZR1000 that snapped it's chain at 70+mph and threw the chain at my friends car, taking out the front grill and denting the leading edge of the bonnet. Had it been higher it could have gone through the windscreen. Fortunately the bloke wasn't going to ride away from the scene Mr. Green

I saw a thread on another forum where the chain wrapped itself round the front sprocket and lunched the gearbox, also snapping off the clutch pushrod (mind you I always hate it when bike mfrs put the clutch pushrod where it can be covered in crap from the chain anyway).

Speaking of which, I must get my chain and sprockets changed Embarassed

I have a tight spot and it's not going to get any better.
