It depends on how susceptible your hands are to the cold, and the kind of distances you travel. The most effective way to avoid the worst of the cold is to have hand guards, like trailies have, but I imagine people on plastic stuff would rather get frostbite
I find a pair of cheapo gloves with thermal inners under them are fine unless it's sub-zero. |

Crap, just noticed you're a Merkin.... dunno if you have Hein Gericke over there?
How cold does it get in California anyway? I always got the impression that in winter you just have to put a long sleeved t-shirt on! ____________________ I was only doing what it said on my licence officer....

Hand guards, in my experience (riding a KTM and a zx9 through last winter) make relatively little difference. Muffs make a massive amount more difference, add heated to grips that and you can have toasty hands in pretty nasty conditions. You do need something like a handguard to hold the muff off the levers though, I made some out of old shelving for my zx9, but may add enduro style guards this ear.
On the last two weekends with both on my KTM I've ridden home from off-roading at motorway speeds with motocross gloves ranging damp to soaking my hands at worst have been slightly chilly.
I'm also interested in recommendations. Unfortunately I don't want to buy the 'crab' gloves at the moment.
I had the five finger Pathans (five finger version of the HG crab gloves.) They weren't bad at all, but could have been better.
I was going to some 'real' goretex ones from HG, but they told me to come back a few days later when they would have some more of another range in stock. Was going to get some, then was told the special offer had ended and they couldn't honour their previous discount , so I walked out with out gloves.
Anyway, looking for moderately warm and as waterproof as possible to be, including over a longer term.
Think I'll go second hand this time, as there's plenty of options on ebay.
Oh and isn't it 'Mercan' - merkin of course being slightly different (though this may have been your intention . |

Nah, that's not road registered yet and is out of action needing a fair few pennies spending .
Twas my 690, which I've seen 108mph on a GPS... that was with pillion and panniers, severly upgeared (gearing limited to around that stock), but also with big metal fairing. |
