Thing is esocobar ran an empire the likes of which were never seen before, and I'd be surprised if there was any one handling such an operation of such scale single handedly (figuratively speaking) today.
There are plenty of Mr Bigs out there, but obviously they keep off the radar as much as possible, theres a lot more surveillance and ways to lock someone up than there were back in good old pablo's day. In addition a lot tie themselves in to many legitimate businesses, not so much to launder the money, but to give the impression of being legitmate, and I suppose have that extra money coming in on top of the extortion, debt collecting and drug running income.

Drug dealers of that magnitude are a thing of the past. Escobars main advantage was the corruption of the Columbian government and his 'Robin Hood' status in Medillin, which meant the locals always covered his back.
Today, at least in my area, the biggest 'gangsters' are involved in mobile phone VAT fraud. The thing is, most are to greedy to stop once they're ahead and end up flaunting their wealth.
There was/is a particular guy around here that drove around in Ferraris and helicopters, lived in a massive house a generally lived the life. He was already rich running many businesses (including drugs), but he and his buddies cottoned on to VAT fraud, got caught and went to prison. He also went to prison for shooting somebody in a 'gang war'. What was the point? Why have loads of money that you can't touch whilst in an 8x8? ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

Not many people do that anymore, after (the bloke your on about) got sent down it brought everyones operation on top. He got the biggest sentence given in the UK concerning fraud.
His son still runs a lot of what they used to be into, still owns 3 cars, a £20k chain, watches. When his old man comes out they will soon be back at the top. |

I've actually met his son a few times, years ago. There are people that are still up to this trick, not to the same scale though. The thing I don't understand is why keep going? Once you've made a million say, why carry on and risk prosecution? Then some of them go and flaunt it about, asking for it. Obviously the chap we were talking about was already very well known before starting the fraud, so don't suppose it mattered to him whether it was flaunted or not. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

He was a millionaire before they even started the fraud as far as i'm aware, and when he was sentenced the treasury 'estimated' that the gang had bled £68m from the system.
You are right though, they should of quit while ahead, but when you've exceeded £50m, why not another 50?
His son has become quite the name around here now though. I actually went to Alderly Edge not long ago with his housemate in a Aston Martin Vantage, it's not bad for some. |

My mates dad used to be a big coke dealer, made so much money from it he started his own business. Most people would recognise the name of the company aswell but I can't say for obvious reasons.
He now lives in a very nice villa in Spain after pissing off years ago. ____________________ ***Previous: GPR50, FZ750 *** Current: Monkey bike, yella SV 650 ***
