New bike advice

Hello,

I am just wondering if you could give me some advice on what things to do or avoid when you ride a new bike?
Are there any particular road surfaces to avoid etc until everything beds in? Or is it a case of just going easy?

If it's brand new, I'd give all the nuts and bolts a quick check in case some underpaid spanner monkey only did something up fingertight.

The running in guide should be in the user manual and the dealer should also talk you through it, if you ask them to.

After doing that you'll be able to ride it without being worried that it might get scratched. Very Happy

Usual reasoning is to take it easy for the first thousand miles or so; don't redline the engine, and no heavy braking (as the pads need to bed in). Oh and watch it on those tyres - brand new rubber is slippy!

The engine will still be very tight and you don't want to run it at high revs or put too much stress on it until things have 'run in' and are used to being in contact with each other - the cam has to wear slightly to match the profile of the valves, for instance.

And it came with a book about how to ride it in properly so thats going to be a handy read.

Its my other half's bike- a 59 suzuki bandit, 1250 sa grand touring in black - very nice bike. Annoying thing is the tax wont be here until tomorrow so can take it on the roads. We have been riding it around our yard this evening, cant wait for the tax to arrive lol

Only negative thing is I am not a good pillion! To the extent that I will take the car when hes using it lol I much prefer being able to put my feet on the ground lol

Have a search on here for running in. Many things suggest you may well end up with less power and a less reliable bike if you run it in by the manufacturers guidelines. Your choice, but "manufacturer knows best" went out with "your doctor recommends you smoke our cigarettes" Smile

One more thing, 99.9% sure I know the answer but am I right in thinking that you have to actually display the tax disc?

Just wondering because its apparently been submitted to dvla etc the dealers are just waiting for the disc to be sent to them which will be tomorrow. Confused

Don't really see the point in buying a new bike if you're not wanting to use it if the weather isn't nice enough. You have a nice bike, but it's sitting in the garage, that's a bit crap really.

It is going to depreciate whatever you do, therefore it makes sense (to me) that you enjoy it as much as possible.

You'd have to get a really arsey police person to do you for not displaying a tax disc - however yellowninja's story shows some are that bad. But then, £60 non endorsable - not that bad compared to what you've paid, or deprecation you're 'paying' etc, so might as well just go for a ride Wink

However, it may be asking for trouble if it's not on the database and you don't have it with you.
