I have give up trying to find any decent lanes up here.Although there is some decent places for a challenge the lanes are generally only a few hundred yards long which means a lot of road riding to get a day's worth of lanes.

So now id like to try some harder stuff Very Happy
I'm in newcastle upon tyne but dont mind travelling a bit for this preferably around 150miles but may go further.

I'd be making a weekend of the trip so would need an area where i can camp out aswell.

So anyone fancy a green lane weekend?

If not then can anyone suggest some decent places i can try on my own within 150 miles (ish) of newcastle upon tyne,if possible with multimap links?

Thanks
Dave

P.S. about two weeks time would be ideal but could do sooner or later.

Have you tried your local TRF group? Though this might be a bad time to join, as I think you pay a not-that-reduced fee that only lasts until December (they may just let you get a 2010 registration in).

They seem a little weird tbh. I tryed emailing them a few times but never had a reply.

Even if i did go through them,i know exactly what kind of lanes they'd be using and i know there mostly crap up here compared to the pics i've seen on here.
(been into 4x4 for years but the same lanes on a bike is just a little too easy)

Be nice to get away for a few day's anyway so i'm pretty sure i want to head south for them. (i'll be in a van anyway so distance isn't a huge problem)

Thanks
Dave

Fair enough, the TRF group down here is pretty good.
Having done the journey to Newcastle quite a few times it's about 300 miles to Reading and an extra 50 to where the SE lot normally start their 'laning from, so probably pushing it a bit, though I'm sure they'd be happy to have you.

Not quite as far as Devon here, but it'd typically take me 5 hours in a car (hire car too, they're always faster!) to get to Newcastle.
Probably worth signing up to the south east forum presuming you're not - stuff is organised in there for most weekends (though I don't tend to attend with that much regularity, looking at current situation it probably won't be until after Christmas for me either now Sad.

Dave, there are some cracking lanes in your neck of the woods and a lot of them are at least a couple of miles long, you certainly shouldn't have to travel far.

Forget your pre-conceptions and go out with the Northumbria Group, they are a great bunch of lads. I am in Lancashire but did two weekends with them this year, they organised two days riding and have their own campsite in Hexham. They are a quick bunch, we did around 100 miles each day, first lane 10 yards from the campsite!

If you join the TRF you can go to any groups rides. I also did two camping and trail riding weekends this year in North Yorkshire, organised by the Teesside & North Yorks group.

That would be uninformed, only based on my experiences of paying up (a bit earlier) last year and getting a tenner off for a much smaller percentage of the year. Thus using the word 'think' Wink.

I'll probably join the trf anyway and see how it goes.Just heard somewhere that they tend to be a close knit group who dont like new comers. Also heard the ride out's were REALLY few and far between.
Of course,that's just hear say.

I used to have my caravan on the hexam site and never knew about any lanes there! How could i miss that Laughing

Will sign up with them anyway when i get back from the grantham trip Thumbs Up

I think the problem is that a lot of poor information is passed around on forums by people that don't have practical experience of what they are talking about. Northumbria are one of the more pro-active groups and if you make the effort they are a very friendly bunch.

The campsite at Hexham is actually just a field owned by one of the members, which means you can do pretty much what you want. They call their weekends "bikes, bevvies and banter" which gives you some idea! Usually there is a big video screen set up showing trail riding videos, booze and a big bonfire.

Oh nearly forgot, two days of trail riding as well!

I think the first "weekender" was around May or June time but keep an eye on their web site as it gets updated here...

Fair enough, i shouldn't really say anything about them until i know personally what it's all about. I just didn't want to spend money only to realise it's a load of crap, but we'll see Very Happy

Thanks for the info tony Thumbs Up

That wasn't intended as a personal dig at you by the way! It is just that there is a lot of negative vibes on here about the TRF for some reason?

You can go along to a couple of meetings and a ride out with them before you decide whether you want to pay your money to join. You can't lose. Very Happy

Yeah i know Smile but i was adding to the negativity by spreading rumours,i will definitely go and see for myself before i make any more comments on them Very Happy

It's only £20 ish Question anyway to join isn't it so i'll join regardless since it's for a good cause.

Thumbs Up

A bit more than that I'm afraid. £40 Jan-Dec or if you join now it is £50 up to Dec 2010.

Still good value, I did 5 riding weekends this year with other groups around the country (they get advertised in the monthly TRF magazine that you will get) and doing a free rights of way seminar this weekend. It also helps to fund the rights of way battles to keep open the lanes, with some notable successes recently.

As I said before, most groups encourage people to for a ride-out and come to a couple of meetings first. By then it will be January and you can get the 12 month rate.

Good luck.

Just my Penny Coin in the pot!!

I'd suggest that there will probably be the one more local meet now before the end of the year if the Northumbria TRF Group are the same as down here (Dorset). Best bet is get along there and see and meet them and then pay up online for 2010 which is being held at £40 as tony_d123 said.

As for breaking into the Group is concerned 'keep at it'. My experience of the first meet was pretty sketchy and I thought they were rather odd and not very friendly. However, if you persist and keep trying they are really ok. The 'organised' rideouts are not as frequent as I would like but I've got involved with some lane clearing and that gets you out and about and chatting along with them too which all helps to 'build' contacts.

Even if you still feel negative after all that, joining up for the year means that you can get your maps marked up which will provide you with the network of lanes in your area to go and explore and more importantly help fund the TRF who are doing their best to keep them open for all of us.

If you're looking for a good weekend worth of riding, heading down to Salisbury and joining in with the Group I ride with would be a good one too, so bear that in mind. There are easily two days riding around the Plains and down into Dorset, then there is all the stuff up Marlborough way too, albeit much of that is closed over winter (April-October riding).

Contrary to a lot of people's reported experiences, my local TRF group was actually very welcoming and friendly.

Yeah it is the full weekend's riding i was looking for ideally.
Getting down to garyd and staying there for 2 days is going to cost me between £250-£300 quid (van hire,hotel/caravan hire,fuel,e.t.c.) Shocked Confused and that's only a 400mile round trip.
As much as i'd love to ride salisbury plain i just cant afford it until after christmas, but 2010 is my year Very Happy i'm planning on a lot of travel so i can have a go at as many lanes as i can.

Thumbs Up Cheers for the reply's Very Happy Thumbs Up

Hopefully by early next year I should have a few working trail bikes.
If I ever sort it out (which is more questionable), you're welcome to borrow one if you could ban be bothered to make the journey down with an alternative form of transport.
Infact, if you're down this way and I'm not out riding, you're welcome to borrow the 690 anyway Smile.
