Someone take me greenlaning...

I have give up trying to find any decent lanes up here.Although there is some decent places for a challenge the lanes are generally only a few hundred yards long which means a lot of road riding to get a day's worth of lanes.

So now id like to try some harder stuff
I'm in newcastle upon tyne but dont mind travelling a bit for this preferably around 150miles but may go further.

I'd be making a weekend of the trip so would need an area where i can camp out aswell.

So anyone fancy a green lane weekend?

If not then can anyone suggest some decent places i can try on my own within 150 miles (ish) of newcastle upon tyne,if possible with multimap links?

Have you tried your local TRF group? Though this might be a bad time to join, as I think you pay a not-that-reduced fee that only lasts until December (they may just let you get a 2010 registration in).

Fair enough, the TRF group down here is pretty good.
Having done the journey to Newcastle quite a few times it's about 300 miles to Reading and an extra 50 to where the SE lot normally start their 'laning from, so probably pushing it a bit, though I'm sure they'd be happy to have you.

Not quite as far as Devon here, but it'd typically take me 5 hours in a car (hire car too, they're always faster!) to get to Newcastle.
Probably worth signing up to the south east forum presuming you're not - stuff is organised in there for most weekends (though I don't tend to attend with that much regularity, looking at current situation it probably won't be until after Christmas for me either now .

That wasn't intended as a personal dig at you by the way! It is just that there is a lot of negative vibes on here about the TRF for some reason?

You can go along to a couple of meetings and a ride out with them before you decide whether you want to pay your money to join. You can't lose.

A bit more than that I'm afraid. £40 Jan-Dec or if you join now it is £50 up to Dec 2010.

Still good value, I did 5 riding weekends this year with other groups around the country (they get advertised in the monthly TRF magazine that you will get) and doing a free rights of way seminar this weekend. It also helps to fund the rights of way battles to keep open the lanes, with some notable successes recently.

As I said before, most groups encourage people to for a ride-out and come to a couple of meetings first. By then it will be January and you can get the 12 month rate.

Just my in the pot!!

I'd suggest that there will probably be the one more local meet now before the end of the year if the Northumbria TRF Group are the same as down here (Dorset). Best bet is get along there and see and meet them and then pay up online for 2010 which is being held at £40 as tony_d123 said.

As for breaking into the Group is concerned 'keep at it'. My experience of the first meet was pretty sketchy and I thought they were rather odd and not very friendly. However, if you persist and keep trying they are really ok. The 'organised' rideouts are not as frequent as I would like but I've got involved with some lane clearing and that gets you out and about and chatting along with them too which all helps to 'build' contacts.

Even if you still feel negative after all that, joining up for the year means that you can get your maps marked up which will provide you with the network of lanes in your area to go and explore and more importantly help fund the TRF who are doing their best to keep them open for all of us.

If you're looking for a good weekend worth of riding, heading down to Salisbury and joining in with the Group I ride with would be a good one too, so bear that in mind. There are easily two days riding around the Plains and down into Dorset, then there is all the stuff up Marlborough way too, albeit much of that is closed over winter (April-October riding).

Hopefully by early next year I should have a few working trail bikes.
If I ever sort it out (which is more questionable), you're welcome to borrow one if you could ban be bothered to make the journey down with an alternative form of transport.
Infact, if you're down this way and I'm not out riding, you're welcome to borrow the 690 anyway .
