Surprise parties

You know the idea, victim is lured to location on false premise and then all friends and family leap out, surprise surprise.
Has anyone here been the victim of this or perpetrated it on someone else?
It was my birthday yesterday and there is a mysterious family meal I am supposed to be attending, I smell Ratus Norvegicus. I have a simple solution.
I am not going and have turned my phone off.

A day or so before my 30th my wife had arranged for the kids to be dropped off at my mums and we go to the cinema and a meal. Driving along the road and I notice a familiar looking car...and another...as I have already mentioned that a divorce would be on the cards if I ever had a surprise party she looked very guilty.

6 weeks in the planning and my opinion:

I drove up to Coventry for my brother's surprise 40th in August. He was really pleased and we had a lovely meal with all his mates!

He's not keen on being the centre of attention, but was more than happy to see everyone and it was a really nice evening!

In theory a surprise party seems like a nice idea because it shows someone gives enough of a fuck about you to do something like that, get all your mates together and have a big piss up. I've never been on the receiving end of a surprise party, though, so it might actually be really horrible.

I organised one for my ex a few years back, I contacted his sister in Thailand and organised for her to come back to the UK, then took him to a location in London (urban) to do something...there we met up with his Dad, and sister and had the surprise birthday of a lifetime!

I am very good at organising surprises, and getting people the right presents.

Unfortunately, people are rarely able to surprise me, because I can read situations, and know my close friends and family well, I can spot dodgy body language too easily...I usually guess things.

I've only had one suprise party tried and the girls mother actually let everyone in apart from me her and them mate I was supposed to be arriving with.

I am far to good for my own right at reading body language and even through texts. Has got me into alot of trouble before by telling people whats really going on, but makes me laugh when some mega big suprise is finally revealed and my only reaction is "Yep knew along time ago."

Makes me laugh and people cry.

Went to one just last week A mate I ride with threw one for his girlfriend. If that wasn't enough of a surprise he proposed to her on the day as well.
he had it all prepped with some help and did a good job of keeping it from her.
Everyone of the women in attendance cried. Never really got this but who understands them anyway

I've been part of 3 surprise parties in the last 2 years, first one was for my future mother-in-laws 40th, that we did in a nice function room and all went according to plan with her being all shocked and there was a disco and that it was a good night, though she was a little pissed off before, cos she thought most people had forgotten.

Then 14 days later we did the same again for my mum's 50th, different pub and with a karaoke disco my mum was very impressed and as my grandad (now deceased) used to sing in the old labour club 1 of my brothers and I sang his signature song you'll never walk alone, it went down with not a dry eye in the house and my brother and I had a whole repetoire of her favourite songs ready by the end of the night I actually had to carry her home as she couldn't stand and was fantastic night.

The last was march this year which was for my better'alf's 21st she'd decided she wanted a quiet family meal for her birthday so with her mum I arranged a surprise party and ended up with the chore of collecting the alcohol, ended up going to asda in the morning after work and buying 3x 24 packs of lager and 12 bottles of wine, scariest ride I think I have ever had as my only personal transport is my bike, and the woman's face in asda was amusing as I walked out with the alcohol at 7am.
The night of the party was pretty good too, cos when we got to her mum's her mum and the meal invitees were stood waiting in the living room when we got into the house, first thing she did was go and stand by the kitchen door where everyone was hiding, she leaned against the door which opened enough to show a kitchen counter top covered in various bottles and crates of alcohol, we all thought she'd guess when she saw this but said nothing, then she went and sat on a sofa and kicked her shoes off and flicked the tv on, it took a further 10 mins to get her into the kitchen much to the amusement of the other guests who nearly gave the game away when laughing, eventually she decides she wants a cuppa walks into the kitchen not noticing the 30 odd people cramped into the space and goes to put the kettle on then after flicking the switch and turning round she gave a scream of fright and everyone shouted surprise! good night had by all but much to her stepdads annoyance we ended up breaking into his wine supplies. though the night finished with her passed out in her mothers bathroom covered in what I can only describe as a chunky red wine smoothy.

I recently organised one for a friend who was leaving for Canada, in order to make sure he attended, I told him about it though...

The surprise was in how many people were there and that when he came in they were all wearing masks of his face, he said later on that it was about the creepiest thing he'd ever seen.

I think it worked quite well.

I've never had one organised for me, I think people can just tell by my standard disposition that it would be a waste of time.

Christ, so many like minded people on here.
I'm not one for centre of attention either, I'm happy enough to go to my friends' parties when they get everyone round and chat to people and make people laugh, but as soon as more than a handful of people turn their attention on me I just switch off and stop making jokes.
Didn't have an 18th, just went out in town with some friends as we did every week (some probably didn't even know it was my birthday). Had about 6 or 7 people round for a BBQ on my 21st, again same situation. This year I didn't even go out for a pint.
People just know I'm a miserable bugger when under attention so wouldn't bother.

I was the victim of a surprise party on my 18th birthday I believe. I got home, walked in to my living room, lights on, 10 party-poppers fire in my direction at once, lots of people shouting ("surprise" I think).

If you'll believe it all I remember is a rush of adrenaline and diving to the floor, hitting the deck quite hard. My mind honestly thought I had walked in to gun fire. By the time I realised what was happening as I stared up from the floor at all of my laughing friends I was not best pleased.

Never been one for the parties myself either, I remember my mom offering time and again to throw one for my 16th and I vehemently refused. Partly because of the fear of no fucker turning up, partly because I was afraid they would turn up and then it's kind of like I've unwillingly have the responsibility of making sure everyone has a good time. Plus I'd have to talk/interact with people who normally I'd probably choose not to do so with.

If all that wasn't enough incentive, then the fact that I knew, but unbeknowest to my mother, it would have turned into a spliff den and the odds would have stacked in favour of a fight breaking out somewhere amonst the ranks.

Other birthdays I would go out up town with mates and try an get smelly finger, if I had female friends that would have succumbed to my drunken advances then a party might have seemed plausible.

THese days I largely don't give a shit, just another day of the year, though if I'm feeling like an outing then my choice of venue is the dog track or a comedy club, I find these more appealing these days than standing in a club playing music that bores me whilst screaming in someones ear in a vain attempt at having a conversation.

Would I ever want a surprise party? Not knowingly, though who knows, I might suprise myself by actually enjoying it!

I have friends who organise their own parties which I find faintly desperate. I'd never organise one for myself, I doubt I'd even say i'm going for a drink as it's my birthday (frankly these days the drink is more to drown sorrows as opposed to celebrating another 365 days of glorious life...)

Obviously there is the danger no bugger would turn up, but I also think if you have to organise your own birthday parties, you might want to have a look at who your friends are. (This topic brings to mind that awful My Super Sweet Sixteen, featuring some of the most grasping spoilt little cunts* that ever walked the earth.)

This is all moot if you're a miserable bastard of course, as I am.
