Hi all,

Does anyone here know where I could get my ali swingarm welded up. I have had a look on google etc but could only find info on TIG welding equipment, not companies that weld aluminium.

Thanks all, love cookies given Karma

if you were in edinburgh i would tell you to go to pentland tech,

they are the best welders of anything i have ever come across,
they did my streetfighter subframe, my single sider milling and modding, they custom made 2 stainless link pipes for me out of a straight peice of stainless pipe, and you couldn't see the 37 welds it required when it was done.

vmaxdude will vouch for them as well, has they did his swing arm on his mz baggi, and loads of stuff for his vmax

Know someone around here that could no doubt do it, but not much help to you probably.

Probably best to ask in at local bike places, as they'll probably have someone they send stuff to.

Can try and find out, but mine is a quite 'local' little place - bloke in a shed (with lots of big welders) kinda thing.
Have you looked at the price of second hand swing arms? May be as easy to get one rather than pay for postage twice as well as getting the work done.

Why do you need it welded up? , just buy a new one!, It may well work out cheaper.

Swing arms are cheap, my CBR replacement was £20 IIRC , namely as G said to me once there is a low demand for swing arms because people who break them usually die in the process of breaking them.

It's not broken, It's me being a bit gay and wanting something a bit different. Its purely for looks. I want this

https://oldskoolsuzuki.info/uk_lee/Technical/swingarm.jpg

To be welded up to look heavily braced a bit like this...

https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2620/3725220172_276b908ab5.jpg

I am sending some bits to get powder coated (swingarm being one of them) so the idea is to weld up, smooth down and powder coat.

I work for a company supplying stuff to metal fabricators covering SE,SW and W postcodes so know most welders in those areas.

I can only think of one Coded Ali welder there near the New Den.

I have in the past asked them about getting brackets welded onto an ally frame when I was considering a CRM/CR hybrid.

The expert opinion was that it was a bad idea as the frame might be weakened (annealed?) and they weren't keen on the idea at all. There a lot of grades of Alu which react differently to heat and you can't tell which your swingarm is.

Bearing in mind the owner is a proper time served biker with experience in customizing bikes I took his word for it.

I'll PM you their number ,or ask the rep covering CR&SM if she knows anyone nearer if you want but I'd search the breakers if I was you.

Could look at some kind of glue - ie the sort Aeroplane wings are held on with etc Smile.

Or maybe tin foil?... seen some nice alloys done with this Wink.

Yes glue will work I've been playing with "Structural Acrylic" for the aluminum Cafe racer tailpiece I'm planning.

It does heat up as it cures but not like tig welding so no risk of damage or distortion as it cools.

I'm not sure if it will take the heat in powdercoating but I'll check tomorrow, the data sheets in the car and it's cold.

Structural Acrylic is fine between -40c and +120c but can tolerate higher temperatures briefly.

Now you just need to know what temperature they heat it too when powdercoating. Smile

I know a bloody good alloy welder/fabricator in Sidcup if it's any good to you; he works mainly on custom american/classic cars - knocked up a winged sump, alloy rad and other goodies for a mate of mine

Glue it with a Pritt-Stick, it's very cheap and bonds for a lifetime or your money back.
