So, back in the very early days, where do you think or know your blood comes from. Viking, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Celt...
I couldn't say for certain, the Irish side of my family seem to believe there is Spanish from way back when. My dads side are all short, stocky, dark hair, big eyebrows, sloping foreheads who enjoy drink and risks... Pure-bred Anglo-Saxon?
Do you ever recognise a 'type' of person? ...a tribe split up maybe. ____________________ BCF's 6th favourite poster 2009-2010

I tried this site
https://www.surnamedb.com/home.aspx
Mine is Tooze this is what I found...
This unusual and intriguing name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is an example of that sizeable group of early European surnames that were gradually created from the habitual use of surnames. These were given in the first instances with reference to a variety of personal qualities, including physical attributes and peculiarities, and mental and moral characteristics. This surname derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century "toh", in Middle English "togh, tow(e)", meaning "vigorous, steadfast, stubborn", used as a nickname for someone considered to be particularly valiant or stubborn. The modern surname forms are Tough, Tow and Towe, and the patronymics Tow(e)s, Toes, To(o)se and To(o)ze, where the "s" is a reduced form of "son of". Early examples of the name include: Gilbert Towe (1275, Hampshire); Alicia la Towe (1275, Worcestershire); Nicholas le Toghe (1275, Kent); and the following from London Church Registers: Margret Towse (1564); William Toes (1580); Thomas Towes (1583); and Mary Tose (1614). The patronymic surname is particularly well recorded in Devonshire: the marriage of Joann Tooze and Richerde Balle took place at St. Martin's, Exeter, on October 16th 1621, and John, son of Michael Tooze, was christened in Whimple, on May 2nd 1665. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Toose, which was dated October 13th 1550, christened at Clyst Hydon, Devonshire, during the reign of King Edward V1, known as "The Boy King", 1547 - 1553. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling. ____________________ Never invite a vampire into your house you silly boy! |

Hi
Never really gone back. Family on my patternal grandmothers side apparently came from the top end of Scotland. Family on my maternal grandmothers side come from Ireland, but the name before that came from Kent in (from memory) 12th century, and before that they came from Normandy.
However no idea about all the other ancestors back through the centuries.
Dragonfly, try your local library. Found a book the past listing the history of Irish surnames.
All the best

The Hardy from my mums side and I got this..
This interesting surname is of early medieval English and French origin, and is derived from the nickname for a brave or perhaps fool-hardy person, one who would risk all for ultimate success. It derives from the Old French, Middle English (1200 - 1500) "hardi", meaning bold or courageous. This surname is an example of that sizeable group of early European surnames that were gradually created from the habitual use of nicknames. The nicknames were given in the first instance with reference to a variety of characteristics, such as physical attributes or peculiarities, mental and moral characteristics, supposed resemblance to an animal or bird's appearance or disposition, habits of dress and occupation. The modern surname can be found as Hardy, Hardey, and Hardie in England and Scotland, whilst it is usually Hardi in France. Examples of the surname recordings include William Le Hardy of Lincoln in 1206, and somewhat later, the marriage of John Hardy and Agnes Payce on November 11th 1563. At the church of St Mary Somerset, William Hardie married Margaret Bover on July 17th 1569. An interesting namebearer, recorded in the "Dictionary of National Biography", was Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769 - 1839), who was the flag captain of Nelson in the "Vanguard" and "Foudroyant" (1799), in the "San Josef" and the "St. George" (1801), and in the "Amphion" and the "Victory" (1802 - 1805), on which Nelson died. He was made a baronet in 1806 and became a vice-admiral in 1807. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Hardi, which was dated 1194, in the "Pipe Rolls of Yorkshire", during the reign of King Richard 1, known as "The Lionheart", 1189 - 1199.
