Hi guys, I'm having a little bit of a problem with my first TZR.

It's a cnut to start, even though the carb is clean and not sticking, and when it does start, it runs for a little while, but then cuts out and won't start for ages.

The gearbox oil is cloudy and white, but the coolant level isn't dropping, and the coolant is still bright orange in colour (as it was when I put it in. Could this be evidence that the cranks seal (s) have failed? if so I'll be ordering a set from Yamaha on wednesday when I'm up that way for my mod 1 Smile

head gasket is a brand new genuine yamaha item, fitted to a freshly flatted off head and barrel, also its not using or gaining any water, or any of the other symptoms id expect to find if the h/g had gone

Hi

The milky gearbox oil could just be from condensation, especially if it has been sat for ages and just attempted to start with no long runs.

Worn crank seals tend to result in a very high and weak idle.

All the best

Keith

I`d start by checking that you do not have a problem with fuel starvation,(crap in the fuel lines)-remove the pipes from the carbs put the fuel tap on prime you should get plenty of fuel flowing.

clean all the jets with carb cleaner and a blast of air.

I`s unlikely to be ignition or rings\piston ware going on what you said.

after that I would be looking at more serious problems, the tzr`s tend to need a full rebuild after about 35-45000 miles

I'll check the lines, and I'll (for the 9th time Evil or Very Mad ) strip and clean the carb out.

It was fully rebuilt about 1000 miles ago, I know the bloke who did it. I then replaced the cylinder gasket less than 30 miles ago. I'll also change the gearbox oil and see if it clears the oil up

Can the head gasket be used more than once? I know it's not the best idea in the world, but if it's possible it'll save me a couple of quid.

I ask because if I take the head off to look at the bore to see if it's scored and if it looks bad I'm considering finally putting my powervalve system on it. I have a spare barrel with piston, moving powervalve, I also have in a box the bushes and the servo, big black control box and the cables and pulley assembly. So if it needs a rebore I'll use that barrel.

It's not a good idea to use the standard ones again but you can sometimes re-use copper head gaskets - you just aneal them before sticking them back on. It's important to check and re-tighten the head a few miles after rebuild. It would be a good idea to get the powervalve funtioning - if it's anything like the 350 YPVS it'll be rubbish without it.

Fair enough, its a 3 tier gasket, one metal and 2 black (possibly nylon or rubber) if i won't be able to use it again, then thats the end of it, and ill order a new one in. Its a bit shit below 6k, but as soon as its above that it really takes off Very Happy I'll do the powervalve if it turns out the piston/rings/barrel are shot

I took the plug out today, it was black and oily, but that could be because I'd just had it running for 30 seconds :S

I put my thumb over the spark plug hole and tried to kick the engine over, my thumb was pushed off with a 'pop' noise, so I'm assuming the compression is ok?

I'm going to Bury on wednesday to take my mod 1, so can stop in at Ekquires to get some gear oil and change whats in the bike now (I did change it when I got it by the way)

Right, tookthe plug out today after trying to start it, it reeks of petrol. I cleaned it up a bit (with a lighter because I didn't have a spare plug to hand) put it back in, and it fired up for about 10 seconds, then backfired and cut out.

Could it be running too rich and fouling plugs and killing them? I'm getting a new plug tomorrow, might try an Iridium as its about £2 more and it *supposedly* doesn't foul as easily as a regular one (copper core?)

The gearbox oil has taken over an hour to drain out, its almost pure white, and very thick. Could the waterpump seal have failed, causing the gooey mess, but not enough that a noticable amount of coolant is being lost?

Again, any help in getting this running is much appreciated

that sounds like it is running very rich. i had a similar characteristics on my bike until i found out the choke lever is the reverse of all others (off is towards you Rolling Eyes )

on the TZR its got a little shaft on the side that you pull out, it makes a little click and stays out (choke on) i know this because it was easier to start with the shaft out, but ran like shit until the shaft was in Very Happy

I'm in the middle of tidying the house Sad so will do the gearbox oil and a new plug as soon as im done. I'm also going to whip the filter out, from memory its got a twin layer DIY filter, so I'm wondering whether the density of that is altering the fuel air mix, because its too thick. if it seems to run better without a filter I'll get a proper Yammy one Smile

Hi, Does anyone have a picture of a TZR125 powervalve setup? I can't figure out where things plug in Sad

I've plugged the control box into the loom via the Black+Brown connector and Black/White (possibly yellow) bullet connector.

trouble is i have no idea where to plug the servo into or the other 5 wires on the control box.

Any help appreciated Smile

Hi

Just uploading a photo of the wiring diagram for a TZR125 2RH.

https://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/TempPicture/TZR125Wiring.jpg

On those the control unit is under the seat on the r/h side, on the side of the subframe, just back from the footrest hanger. The servo unit is on the inside of the main frame on the right, just above the barrel.

All the best

Keith

Hi Keith,

Thanks for posting that, I had a look, and it appears that my first guess was correc,. the servo is plugged directly onto the controller.

I emailed the guy I bought it off, and he sent me the wiring diargram you posted, and an english version. He said it had come off a bike being broken for spares and he had seen it working. I assume that because my battery is fairly discharged it doesn't have enough power to do the startup thing (buzzes 3 times)

Hi

Might well be a battery on its last legs. Even my 250 isn't enthusiastic about cycling the power valve when you turn the ignition on if it has been sat for a few weeks.

All the best

Keith

It's a fairly new battery, I just haven't run the engine for long enough to charge it, I'll try borrowing a charger and hooking it up to that to check it's all good Very Happy I'm busy stripping the carb down and giving it a proper thorough clean to see if, when combined with a new spark plug, it helps with the running problem
