Ego we need it, its helps push us forward. Its an energy.
It can be used honestly or dishonestly.
Web-chat isn't easy for me, i'm more a person to person kinda bloke. So can't enter in full to most typed discussions.
Always interests me when people go through eureka moments and i'm glad Hetzer is enjoying his. Some people never have them or need them.

It's another scam.
A nation of people 'existing' on the absolute minimum and happy about doing so.
Advocation of non-violence... don't want to upset your karma by hitting someone back, do you?
A nation of people, just sitting.
Gives the ruling class a free-run to rape the GDP and live as kings.
Buddhism is the most relevant belief system still kicking around, but when you have a look at the process that occurs when conciousness enters a foetus... it's bullshit.
...and then you have to question the whole thing. But that's Buddhism and questioning it constantly is what it's all about.
I think it's impossible to rid yourself of ego. You would have to be monk-like... and quite frankly if it turns out I've only got this life to live and I've spent the cunt sitting down, without sex, without toys, without fun, I am going to be very upset with myself.
It would be alright for SOME to live without an ego, Buddhists rely on begging, but if we all did... I don't think life would be worth living. Ego is the engine, some of us have a 5 litre V12, others a 1.6 Diesel, a 50cc... some want it all and quickly, some chug along and enjoy the scenery, destination unknown. No ego would be like sitting in a tepid bath with your eyes closed forever.
I haven't really thought about any of this, It's either this or cbeebies. ____________________ BCF's 6th favourite poster 2009-2010

Here's the way I see it:
Without an ego in theory you wouldn't care what people think of you. But if you don't care, you'll end up doing things only for yourself, becuase you'll do what you want as you don't care what others think. This means you are a selfish little shit.
Having no ego is like having no soul. The ego is your drive. You want people to percieve you in a good light but there are different ways of going about it. Some people do it the nice way, by doing good things, and thereby aquiring a positive image. Some people will bully their way through life, taking charge and getting to the top, but this ultimately gives them a positive image due to their success.
I am blabbering. Good day |

I like it 'cause it's true and profound
According to Freud, the ego is that rational part of your mind that balances the desires of the id with the awareness of the super-ego; the id says "want that one", the super-ego says "But you know those ice creams will make you fat, and then people won't love you...". The ego says "Fat and happy, or thin and sad? Decisions, decisions...." And then make a decision based on whether you listen to your super-ego or id more...
The quest for nirvana could be seen as catering to the id - the fulfilment of all the id's desires along the pleasure principle... The ego is often thought of as where our minds really are, with the id being the animal wants and the super-ego being our socialised sense of self within a community, the ego is where we do our thinking, and where we make the compromises between id and super-ego: "I'll have ice-cream now, but go for a run tonight" - the well-balanced ego tries to compromise between the baser desires, and the guilt-inducing awareness of the opinion of others.
To me it seems a bit split personalityish, as if when we want an ice-cream, it's not a rational desire, but a product of the animal body we inhabit. And that the reason we don't do bad things is because our super-ego will punish us for 'breaking the rules'. It suggests that we can't make moral decisions based on morality and logic alone. Perhaps we can't. I dunno
As the posts show, the understanding/definition of what the ego is is still up for debate

Hi
I think I might describe a persons ego as the difference between their opinion of their worth and their real worth. As such it can be positive (when people have a higher view of themselves than reality can support) or negative (when people have a lower view). Most people have a strongly positive ego on most things.
Possibly the zero point on that scale is when they are at the point that Hetzer mentions.
All the best
