Fill it with a pint of cheap vinegar (around 45p for tesco value stuff) and boil it a few times. Then rinse it out and boil it with a couple of fills of clean water. It'll be like brand new.
I do this with the girlfriends kettle about once a month to descale it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Because despite having a ok take on dark matter ... he still managed to fill the kettle up with over a liter of white spirit from a large white spirt filfy bottle with label .. that my neighbour had just given me ... !
.. the mitigating factors involved still bode no excuse for his numtyness ..... ____________________ We all choose what to think about ... |

Unlikely to work, meths is very small as a compound so can seep into plastic and slowly leech out over time. Even if you've cleaned it as best you can it's probably not worth the risk of poisoning.
Get a new kettle. |
Don't know where you learned chemistry. |
RAPRA, a.k.a the rubber and plastics research agency! Though to be fair, I'm an electromechanical/electronics engineer by trade (or at least I used to be) and worked on manufacturing prototypes when I was there, I'm not a petrochemical engineer!
However, I know for a fact that some, but not all (I should have made that clear) plastics can be affected by ethanol or methanol as it's sometimes used as a treatment. I can't remember which one it is (maybe acrylic) but that can be given a shattered appearance by treating it with methanol. Others may become 'plasticised' (more floppy), those are the ones you have to watch due to the amount they absorb. Most plastics though will be unaffected. If some has been absorbed by a plastic, as it's effectively trapped within, raising its temperature above the boiling point may not get rid of all of it... But as it's not chemically bonded to the plastic, it does have a tendency to leech out over time.
As it's white spirit though, just clean it until it doesn't stink anymore... Or get a new kettle! |

Yep. Any old vinegar will loosen the limescale. Boil it with the vinegar in, leave it to sit for a bit (obviously, you get a strong smell of vinegar) then rinse out thoroughly. Shiny clean.
You can also buy kettle descaler stuff but it's a lot more expensive than cheap vinegar. |
We get loads of limescale in our kettle at work because we use water from teh water cooler since the tap water is not suitable for drinking. Every couple of weeks it gets treated with 12M sulphuric acid for half hour, which is overkill if you ask me, but he rinses it out well after an this has been going on for well over a year and my oesphagus has not dissolved yet......cleans the kettle a treat though!
