I am new to this video malarkey ... having recently borrowed a camera from G.
Anyway, took the footage and it came out very nice (apart from my editing and director skills).
But it is here that I am stuck ... when I save it to my hard drive its huge ... if I them try to lower the size in Movie Maker, it comes out ridiculously small 'screen' size wise.
I then saved it to youtube and the quality of terrible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CUraFrh2_E

SO:
1) What software and file 'screen' size should I be using ?
2) Where can I store it that doesnt lose too much quality?
3) Should I lose the cheesy music ? Smile
4) Should I stay away from MikeJ roosting and throwing mud on the lens at the start Smile

Nothing wrong with that footage, it's top-notch.

How facking fast were you going? Did you speed the footage up or something? I was half waiting for somebody to come off and cartwheel 50ft into the air in bits. Shocked Laughing

That bike of yours sure rides nice. Didn't see it loose composure once when swapping ruts. You must of been hitting 60 in places.

Nice bit of mud-splash on the lense....just in the right place.

Good riding all round Thumbs Up

Oh! the tech question...ask someone else, i'm gonna watch it again.

It's good quality Thumbs Up I do believe that windows movie maker lets you choose exactly what output you want though. Last time I used it, it gave me a list of resolutions and bit rates I could adjust to get varying file sizes.

Good video as well!

Thanks for the feedback.
I wasnt 'attention whoring' , but I think the reason it looked so bad on youtube, was because I am watching it in hidef on pc ... and the difference is quite obvious.
Did I mention HiDef ? (now thats attention whoring Smile )
Looking at it again on youtube... its not so bad !

It was the first go at making a video of a ride.
I did like the way the helmet cam stays so stable (shows how much the body absorbs the bumps etc) , and you can see the bike moving about.
Will play about with camera placement over the next month or so and see whats best. Blue had a good idea of putting it down low and looking at the forks .. seeing all the compression etc. May try that (cue lost and broken camera when I hit a rock Sad )

Speed wise ... nope! the film wasnt speeded up at all. I am only just learning how to edit by cutting clips and adding music (using the new movie maker in Windows 7.. and its cr*p).
There are 2 reasons why it looks so fast:
1) The music ... without it I swear is looks slower Smile
and 2) The wide angle lens makes things look 'faster'.
Having said that (and my speedo has never worked) ... but on later bits where we go through the pine trees etc, I swear I am in 5th and 3/4 on the power ?? so must be doing about 50mph + ??? (anyone with a speedo on the ride know ?)

What camera are you using, looks pretty good...

Only problem eith mounting on the forks...will it not just get caked in mud?

It hasn't be converted to 'HQ' by Youtube so I guess the original file didnt have a high enough bitrate.

For standard 4:3 footage, I convert to 640x480 at 2,000kbps bitrate and sound as good as the original (which can be quite low but that's fine) after a few hours Youtube should increase so its HQ. Best file format is H264, but WMV or Xvid is fine. It's never gonna look as good as the original.

Heres one of my old videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VFQj6eNRMY

You can upconvert to HD. It'll look better because Youtube will allow a higher bitrate. 1280x960 is a 4:3 HD res. I did the same here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4G16D9GR7A

Also Vimeo.com does have better quality... but still not as good as the original.

Just like the old road riding days but in mud Very Happy

I've got a Garmin GPS thingy that logs the rides and we've hit 50 mph in some parts.

Any more footage of the ride Silky? Particularly the last lane of the day up towards Newlands where Mike and me were getting a bit out of shape.

Shortly before coming across a massive hole or deep mud and then making the choice between trying to slow down in time or slaming the throttle open and jumping it.

more intense than the road riding days.

Ergo: Get an off-road bike.

Here it is ... all a bit distant and probably boring for those not on the ride.

Here Silky, I wrote you a guide.

How to get HD movies from Windows Movie Maker (pre-Windows 7)

Go here: https://www.bauer-power.net/2009/04/create-hd-videos-in-windows-movie-maker.html

Download the file and put it where it says to.

Start Movie Maker, make your movie etc.

Then. File, Save Movie...

https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n245/MonkeyKnuckle/WMMtips1.jpg

Select 'Save to PC' then hit next.

https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n245/MonkeyKnuckle/WMMtips2.jpg

Name it and choose a location, hit next.

Select 'Other Settings' then one of the HD options at the bottom. I use 1280x720. (If the HD settings aren't there then go back to the website at the top and re-check all the steps.) Then hit next.

https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n245/MonkeyKnuckle/WMMtips3.jpg

It will then start saving the movie (this could take a while.....)

Then upload to Youtube (again, could take ages.....)

It won't appear as HD on Youtube until it's finished processing the video, which takes ages.
Laughing

Hope this helps.

Looks all good to me, and excellent fun.

However, personally I prefer to hear engine noise rather than music. I realise I'm probably in the minority and that both tunes were excellent. Nothing worse than biking vids ruined by shite music.

^^^Aye that seems the trickiest part...getting good quality sound and not just varying whoosh noises.
That recent BCF post of a trackday had good audio, would sound nice to fade some engine noise in now and again.

Yeah I would normally agree ... but the camera only pics up my bike, and trust me, there is nothing more boring than the dull thud of my 400cc single at low revs.
Plus the videos just seemed a bit boring with just bike noises ... they are not like track day ones where you are hitting a bend every 100 yards and can hear the revving of the bike etc.

I think there may be 2 solutions ... 1) I need to ride faster and do more exciting stuff Shocked .. or 2) I need to buy a nice revvy 2 stroke Twisted Evil

I do a lot of video and I use Pinnacle studio ultimate 12, very simple, lashings of top effects and titles...probably pick it up for about £30 now (do not buy version 14, far more inferior)

I capture everything as .avi files, which are massive put when I have editted it I export the finished product as an .mp4, perfect for you tube with no loss of sound, vision or size....

hope that helps

Mick

Cheers Mick Thumbs Up ... unfortunately I am a born northerner and have difficulty parting with my money ... so the only version I could 'acquire' was v.14.
What is lost from v.12 to v.14 ? if its something significant, I may be tempted to go and buy v.12

Yeah, me a northerner too....know what you mean Thumbs Up

I actually have both, there are some good fades, wipes 'anti-shake' filters on 12 (handy for bike videos....its called Pro-Dad Mercalli if you want to track it down) and the titling software is shitloads easier to use, other than that they are similiar......very good package....PM me if you get stuck withit....been using it for a while.....what camrea are you using ????
