Had an issue with a strange sound - firstly with an '82 GL1100 GoldWing and more recently on a '85 Magna 500.

Getting a high-pitched whirring/buzzing sound - occasional, not continuous, does not increase with engine speed, occurs around 3000rpm, and sometimes will persist at tickover but stops when throttle blipped. Will not happen when bike is stationary so cannot trace when off bike(s)

Thought it might be linked to ignition amplifiers - have found evidence of overheating - the resin has melted out of the pots. Replacements have not cured the sound.

Anyone else had this - got any clues??

Hey Pete, bit of a long shot but have you got any Cable operated instruments?

My old 250's tacho used to make a wiring noise, and the 400 has recently started to get it on the speedo. If youve got clocks, give them a firm tap when it buzzes and if the sound changes then you've isolated it.

Curing it is something Ive not worked out yet, I'm probably going to go for some WD40 into the clock through the cable hole to lubricate, then a blob of LM grease on the end of the cable to try and stop vibration between cable and clock.

Cheers
VJ

Hey VJ!
Thats an interesting thought - although the noise continues when I stop rolling but not long enough for me to locate the source!

My next plan is to cable tie a piece of plastic tube to different areas on the bike and stick it inside my lid(!) At least I should be able to work out the general area of origin.

BTW (everyone else) Did I mention the Magna was modified?

Same as on the 400, Took me ages to work it out, my speedo likes to buzz at 10-20mph, but sometimes I can come to a stop and it buzzes shortly after.

Nice idea on the pipe, might look a bit wierd though. Laughing

P.s. could only rate the magna and thunderdog as cool, there isnt a 'cool as penguins piss on a cold day' rating

Cheers

I'm about 75% sure that the GL and the Magna both use fuel pumps. They always tend to buzz but it might be a pressure sensor or similar causing them to prime at random times or maybe the bushes are worn down. Dunno Thinking Only other thing I can think of is a poor connection to the battery.

Don't think its likely to be ignition related, I would expect the pitch to change with engine revs, same goes for most mechanical items or air leaks.

Always worth checking any relays.

Yeah Ichy,
Fuel pump on 'Wing is mechanical - off the right camshaft, and have ripped out (almost) all the relays on the bike - the Manga may well be electric - not checked that yet, sounds a good idea.

Just thought of another one. Check the fuel filter is clear and the pipe from the tank is flowing fuel ok, it might be restricting the flow of fuel to the pump.
