Ok, first of all I'll say really quick, I doubt any of you will have heard of this as the story's about a month old and happened across the pond, but I was just curious what opinions you guys hold of performers pushing the boundaries regarding public decency.

Adam Lambert, runner-up in American Idol this year, performed at the American Music Awards on the 22nd of November. He sang one of his own songs, the lyrics of which were... let's say racy. The performance followed suit as Adam proceeded to "enhance" it from the rehearsal and simulated oral sex on stage, as well as kissing his male keyboardist. Three appearances scheduled on other daytime shows the following week were promptly cancelled, some others - including interviews - were pre-recorded for fear of... well, I dunno... him suddenly jumping up and mimicking a BJ with the host. Rolling Eyes

In response to the uproar, Adam spoke in several interviews and claimed he "was just interpreting the lyrics" and that "those lyrics aren't for everybody [...] it's about going out to a club, and getting laid" and so on. He also said immediately after his performance that the songs he was singing later in the week had a much different vibe, being more about love and the search for love, not sex.

The appearance was the last on the show and was well after 10pm. People complained that their kids were witness to the shenanigans, but I can't help wondering, why are the kids up at that time? Even if they are fans, shouldn't the parents exercise a little discipline, responsibility, or just accept the fact that it happened and explain it to any confused kids? Such controversy about his adventurous display of sexuality, yet when Madonna and Britney started making out on stage a few years back no-one batted an eyelid. Surely a gay kiss is the same, regardless of gender?

I'm more interested in your opinions on this kind of behaviour than the politics behind it, although if you want to elaborate on the USAs closed-minded views of sexuality then that's cool. I'll probably learn something.

I'm very much of the opinion that no lines were crossed. I think that the people who didn't like it had a choice whether they watched it or not, and I think that the "damaged kids" will be pretty much unaffected because once they reach their teens parents have little control over them. It's human nature to learn and experiment and try new/different things, and teenagers do that however well or badly they're raised. Those years are there for self-discovery, and just because a kid sees sex on telly doesn't mean he'll be doing it himself before he's ready to. Parents have to grow the f**k up and accept that they can't wrap their kids in cotton wool. Life is unpleasant, people do things you don't like. Get over it.

If you want to see for yourself, look here. Interview here.

For the record, his vocals were not up to his usual standard. He's a pretty decent singer normally.

I'm getting more and more intolerant of crude behaviour in my old age, so I think a line was crossed. Again. Being after the 9pm watershed is no excuse, especially if it is a special occasion, such as an award ceremony, where it can be assumed younger viewers will watch it too.

There would be less problems if parents raised their kids themselves rather than passing the responsibility to the TV.

Something like the X factor is a Family program, yes it was on after 10pm, but it will have started way before the childs bed time and was a natural thing to let a child watch to the end of a family program.

Most will have been offended even if it was girl on boy action, not everyone is ready for boy on boy action and it shouldn't be thrust upon people. It is ok saying get with the times, but perhaps they are with the times and homosexual simulated sex on live tv is still for the future.

To me the biggest thing that people who objected to it have to answer for is, why the double standards.

A young-ish woman and a very old woman making out on stage is in some senses worse? (Although I would certainly prefer to see that than a gay kiss, but we are talking people who are objecting on some kind of principle)

The yanks are probably afraid it will encourage their kids to turn into 'fags', whereas two chicks making out is just fine and dandy.

I didn't see it and neither did my children, who were in bed by 9pm, so no we weren't offended.

What is offensive is that Simon Cowell has managed to flog the "Pop Idol" format around the world.

I'm pretty sure that's the truth of the matter... or at least become sexual deviants at a younger age.

Makes me wonder how the public would react if the roles were reversed and women dominated the media. Moreover, would women air the same stuff. Thinking

If parents did use less tv, would we have less Homosexuals? As it seems that TV advertises homosexual activity, from Quentin Crisp to Graham Norton with all inbetween. If there wasn't a homosexual platform to shout from, would so many think being homosexual was trendy or use for shock value?

I'm not so much accusing television for shaping the morals and desires of a child, more agreeing with the thought that it's the parent's responsibility to raise their kid and that the kid gets the more important teachings of life from parents and not the media. I'm just saying that in the precious early years these kinds of thing should be understood for what they are and the meanings shouldn't be misinterpreted or palmed off as fun and games in it's most explicit sense. That just leads to more confusion as far as I see it. Confused

Where to shove your willy shouldn't be confusing, the answer being, anywhere as long as it doesn't have a willy too.

I get the general jist that women have no more desire than straight men to see to 2 guys slipping each other a crippler - lets face it, girls look and smell good, so even other women are happy at seeing one lick anothers badger, whereas the scene of two men "clashing swords" is not so inspiring.

The Americans are afraid of change. They still have a childish attitude.

Although they're growing up. A bit. Health care obliterated previous Presidents, Obama just got it through by (I think?) 2 votes was it?

Can't believe some people still see homosexuality as a trait acquired or gained. It's something someone's born with, they have no control.

Although I personally don't like to see two men flapping their willy wonkers around some men do...

No I'm not gay. I'm just seeing homosexuality from a fairer side.

I believe some are born some have it thrust upon them, but just like an artist, you have to be shown the brush or pencil to develope your art.
If you are never given a brush or know what a pencil is are you still an artist, or just a person with ideas?

Hmm... A very valid point. But then surely if you grew up not knowing anything about women what would your primal instincts be telling you? We are still animals with basic instincts and needs, home, food, companionship, surely you'd find a way to fill these needs?

The way you're brought up is a very important factor, but when most people become of an age they think for themselves, rethink over what values their parents/guardians have put for them. Creating their own values and ideas.

I have always wanted to draw, and yeah I agree with you, you would be just a person with an imagination until you show people what you think, then you become the artist.

Sometimes I get really strong urges to draw something, it comes from no where. I've drawn from a young age but as you said, if I was never introduced to pencil and paper I don't know how I would achieve in expressing my ideas. Thumbs Up

You mean like a disease? I suppose looking at it that way means it's very unlikely to be hereditary. Razz

Unless something is in your DNA then you do have control over it. If someone is gay then that is something to do with their upbringing. Not saying that anyone has done anything wrong, but for that person to turn out gay there must have been things that happened in that persons life which contributed to that outcome. Nothing happens randomly, everything is for a reason.

I have nothing against gays, but just like spiders, if I ever find one in my bath then I will probably kill it.

Haha. Laughing

I have nothing against them, sorry if my comment came across that way.

I wouldn't necessarily kill him if he was in my bath but I would be very uncomfortable.

But to be fair, if anyone I didn't know was in my bath I'd still be like...

Eh'em?

Well a spider I can pick up and just put out in the garden...

But a homosexual. Now that means touching if I wanted to physically move him myself. Laughing

I wouldn't be uncomfortable with a spider though.

So if there was a gay in your bath, you would just leave it there rather than putting it out the window or flushing it down the toilet? Shocked

I'd have to manhandle him if I wanted to flush him down my toilet.

I'd tell him to get the fcuk out a my house before the dogs realise he's here. Then I'd get a law suit for my dogs trying to kill him. Rolling Eyes
