https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/6906110/Akmal-Shaikh-China-warns-Britain-as-row-over-executed-Briton-intensifies.html

Is this all gonna blow over, or is the one eyed scottish idiot, going to lead us into another "crusade".

Admittably death was a bit tough seen as he was apparently a sandwich short, should they have mentally assessed him properly?

Knowing chinas stance, i.e not really well known for backing down, is this going to be the blue touchpaper lit?

Edit: Just found his great performance of his self penned world number one hit he was supposedly tricked to china to record with the promise of becoming a superstar.

Well he did break the local law. If he was that mentally unbalanced, what care was he receiving, and who's responsible for it?

It really doesn't matter. The dead guy is back in the real world, those responsible for his death will slap themselves on the wrist when their turn comes and be held back, by themselves, from advancing to a better world... Rolling Eyes

If Brown had his way Akmal would be punished by way of weekly visits by some bored PCSO whilst also getting free comfy government funded accommodation and benefits.

If we expect visitors to respect our rules, we should respect theirs as well, it's cold and yes it's a shame but meh, perhaps Akmal's family should be asking themselves how they let him get brought into the whole deal? Someone with severe bipolar disorder isn't going to be able to keep quiet when they think they are going to have 'fame' like that given to them Thinking

The issue of whether he should have been executed or not is irrelevant to me - the punishments for such crimes in China are widely known.

What does annoy me though is how Brown and the self righteous moral defender Milliband and now are making Britain look ridiculous, deluded and worst of all highlighting our lack of influence in the modern world, pathetically railing with tiny fists against that rights-violater that we buy everything from.

I dont think someone having bipolar disorder means they should be immune from prosecution. I'm a bit puzzled why anyone else would.

Is a bit odd.
Gets in with the drugs trade
Goes to China with drugs
Gets caught
Gets Dead.
No problem.
The eeeeeeeeeeeeeediot Brown and his posse are doing the chest beating thing making Britain, and by that people read England, look stupid and weak.

"The tragic deaths of protesters in Iran are yet another reminder of how the Iranian regime deals with protest," he (Milliband) said.

Oh, the brass neck of the fellow. G20, Mr Milliband?

Very good point.

In Greece there were riots after their police killed someone, in this country, we just shrug.

There are also people who are not 'mentally ill' just naive. China thinks these people should be executed for unknowingly carrying a suitcase that contains some harmless recreational substances. Why do we think they should care that he is a bit ill.

We in this country also have a stupid stance on drugs.
Although while I would not go as far as to say sensible, we do have a more sensible stance on people with 'mental illness'.

China doesn't give a phu* what anyone in the world thinks and why should they ?. So the UK Government rants, postures, and stamps it's feet a bit, all the usual stuff to convince people that they really care when they don't and then goes back to 'cooking' the expenses claims. If anyone carrying a British (Whatever that means these days) passport breaks another countries laws, there's a bill to be paid, no-one has a right to expect a "Oh never mind, come home now diddums". One bloke I spoke to today said that in his opinion this country should follow in China's footsteps if we're serious about 'hard' drug control.

All of the bleedin' hearts brigade can wail as much as they like. I for one wont be shedding a single tear over the execution of this wanker.
I reckon that the UK could learn an awful lot from the Chinese when it comes to sentencing criminals.

This.

Maybe if the criminal system in this country actually taught a lesson, maybe people wouldn't do it?

I mean, if I was low on cash, I'd probably try robbing some places, maybe get hurt in the process by a dog, or a carelessly placed window that was in the way.

I'm guaranteed to be let off, and probably get more money than the average worker.......

Or....

I could go to China, try and smuggle drugs....and face being put in front of the firing squad.

Putting someone to death for carrying drugs is completely wrong, regardless of it's 0.01g or 1,000kg.

However, since in this country we expect foreigners to follow our laws, it'd be hypocritical to think that British people aren't subject to local laws when in other countries. It's quite widely known that carrying something through an airport for someone else is a really bad idea and that not knowing what's in the suitcase isn't a defense. He knew what he was doing, he knew that he was carrying a suitcase through the airport for someone else. It's not like the stuff was planted in his luggage, he knew perfectly well what he was doing.

Him being bipolar isn't really relevant. I don't think that it has any affect on peoples ability to make judgments and I'm pretty certain that it being banded about as an excuse doesn't do any favours to people who are actually bipolar. And if he was bipolar then how come he hadn't been diagnosed with it before his arrest? No proof was ever shown to the Chinese in the two years that he was in prison there. Pretty harsh that the Chinese say he should have provided the proof rather than them doing assessments, but if he was bipolar then there must have been some documents in this country (or America or Poland) in his medical records that could have helped support the claim that he was bi polar.

There's a bit more to it than that...

He moved from Pakistan with his parents when he was a child. Got married, had kids, moved to America and worked as an estate agent but the business failed so he came back. He then started a mini cab company in London where he sexually harassed a 24yr old employee and sacked her so she then got £10k from him at a tribunal, his cab company went bankrupt. He refused to pay her and he moved to Poland where he had another marriage and more kids.

Got divorced and was wanted by the courts in Poland for not paying maintenance to his ex. Whilst in Poland he got himself a 1yr suspended jail sentence for drink driving.

He fancied himself as an entrepreneur and was regularly going to the city council in Lublin with his new business proposals. He wanted to open an air-taxi between Lublin and Warsaw, he wanted to export lambs meat from Lublin to the UK, he wanted to build a mosque in Lublin in 2005 and this was his last business proposal.

The council didn't like his mosque idea so he started sending threatening text messages to councilors and to companies who hadn't wanted to give him financial support. After that came the terrorist threats, he emailed his bank claiming that he was part of the July '07 attacks in London, no charges were ever leveled against him.

Then he writes his song about a rabbit, gets involved with drug smugglers, got caught, Reprieve released the recording of his song and it was only then that they decided he's mentally ill. Now the timing could just be coincidence but I don't think so.

So that is the 'British' man that the fuss is all about. Rolling Eyes

His rabbit song would have made a better christmas number one than Rage Against The Machine and it would have been a much bigger 'fuck you' to Simon Cowell and X Factor if they were beaten by a song with such little musical talent. Mr. Green

The last Brit to be executed abroad was British-born Jackie Elliot who was executed in Texas in 2003 for a murder many say he did not commit. Clive Stafford Smith, the British human rights lawyer, fought a desperate battle to save him. Here he recounts the frantic last hours before the execution, as evidence mounted that he was witnessing one of the worst miscarriages of justice he has ever experienced.

https://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/feb/09/usa.comment

Was our government criticising America about that in the same way they're currently criticising China? Of course not, Blair wouldn't had ever said a bad word about his best friend (and only friend unless you count Brown) in the whole wide world. Rolling Eyes

This year in China there have been between 1400-1700 executions for 60+ different offenses. The trial for Akhmal Shaikh lasted all of half an hour and they decided to execute him. They killed him by lethal injection, his body doesn't get returned to his family, instead I expect it'll be cut up for organs, the same as happens with bodies from other executions in China.

They have absolutely no idea of human rights, their barbaric practices have no place in the modern world. They're still harping on about the opium wars of 1840 and using that as part of their justification of the execution of Akhmal Shaikh.

I mean, he smuggles 4kg of heroin, so they give him death by lethal injection? Laughing

I dread to think what a chinese lethal injection is like!

I'll have a bullet thanks any day of the week...

I don't get the big deal to be honest. If your gonna smuggle drugs you at least do some homework first. Asia is well known for killing drug dealers without much hesitation so if you deal drugs over there then you acknowledge the risks....

Upon reading Ste's post about his past life, I have retreated any sympathy for this man.

As for learning and doing like China, I agree to an extent.

We should bring back the death penalty for serious crimes because as we know our 'justice' system is pathetic.

Our prisons are over run, with ridiculous sentencing for minor crimes and major.

- 12 months for speeding.

- Caution and temporary expulsion for a police officer crashing and killing a due-to-be-wed girl in a pursuit.

Crime does pay. And criminals know it. They need a deterrent. Not a slap on the wrist if you're under 18. Rolling Eyes

People who complain about the penalties for dealing in drugs (selling, transporting etc) seem to forget that the money is there only because of those penalties. You don't get paid £15000 for shipping eight kilos of coke, you get £15000 for risking ten years inside.

The death penalty...until there can be a 100% cast-iron gaurantee that nobody would ever again be executed for a crime they didn't commit it should remain banned. And that includes for DNA evidenced convictions, because wrongful conviction isn't the only reason to ban it. Any society that allows it is, by definition, savage and unworthy of the term 'civilised'.

And as for our justice system being pathetic, I agree. And it will remain so until they repeal all of the laws which do not deal with actual harm to people.
